Kontak bahasa

Kontak bahasa (language contact) atau sentuh bahasa adalah saling pengaruh antara dua atau lebih bahasa atau ragam bahasa karena penutur berbagai bahasa tersebut sering berinteraksi. Kontak bahasa muncul pada beragam fenomena, termasuk konvergensi bahasa, perubahan bahasa, peminjaman, dan releksifikasi. Produk umum dari kontak bahasa adalah bahasa pijin, bahasa kreol, bahasa campuran, dan alih kode.

Penyerapan kata-kata

Cara paling umum bagaimana bahasa-bahasa mempengaruhi satu sama lain ialah dengan pertukaran kata-kata. Yang dewasa ini umum ialah diserapnya kata-kata Inggris di bahasa-bahasa lainnya. Namun fenomena ini tidaklah baru, atau sangat besar jika ditilik menurut standar sejarah. Penyerapan kata-kata Latin dan Prancis dalam bahasa Inggris yang berlangsung pada abad ke-16 dan ke-17 jauh lebih signifikan. Beberapa bahasa telah menyerap banyak sekali kosakata dari bahasa lainnya sampai-sampai kekerabatan bahasa tersebut nyaris tidak tampak. Bahasa Armenia misalkan telah menyerap banyak sekali kata-kata dari bahasa-bahasa Iran, sehingga pada awalnya bahasa Armenia dianggap cabang bahasa Indo-Iran dan bukan cabang tersendiri dari rumpun bahasa Indo-Eropa selama beberapa dasawarsa.^[1] Pengaruh bahasa Sansekreta pada bahasa Jawa Kuno juga sangat besar, hampir 50% perbendaharaan kosakata Jawa Kuno secara langsung maupun tidak langsung berasal dari bahasa Sansekerta.^[2]
