Kekatolikan

Kekatolikan (dari bahasa Yunani Kuno: καθολικός, translit. katholikós, har. 'umum', 'menyeluruh', via bahasa Latin: catholicus)^[1] adalah konsep dan praktik kepercayaan yang diterima secara luas di berbagai denominasi Kristen, utamanya yang mengaku sebagai katolik sesuai Empat Tanda Gereja, sebagaimana diungkapkan dalam Pengakuan Iman Nicea dari Konsili Konstantinopel Pertama pada tahun 381: "[Aku percaya] pada Gereja yang tunggal, kudus, katolik, dan apostolik."

Gereja Katolik dikenal pula sebagai Gereja Katolik Roma; istilah Katolik Roma utamanya dipakai dalam konteks ekumenis, di tempat di mana gereja lain memakai istilah katolik, yang membedakan dari istilah yang lebih luas.^[2]^[3] Meski komunitas Roma yang dikepalai paus disebut Gereja Katolik, namun ciri dan istilah katolik berasal dari Gereja Ortodoks Timur, Ortodoks Oriental, dan Asiria Timur. Hal ini terjadi juga di Lutheranisme, Anglikanisme, Katolisisme Independen serta denominasi Kristen lainnya. Sifat-sifat yang mendefinisikan katolik bervariasi di berbagai denominasi, tetapi atribut yang digunakan serupa, seperti sakramen formal, pemerintahan episkopal, suksesi apostolik, ibadat liturgi terstruktur, dan eklesiologi-eklesiologi lainnya.
