2015年王愈超等人在《動物學研究(英语:Zoological Studies)》發表研究,认为中華白海豚可分為兩個亞種:指名亚种(S. c. chinensis)與臺灣亚种(S. c. taiwanensis,也称「台湾白海豚」),二者的斑點圖樣幾乎完全不同,在地理區隔與動物行為方面也不同[9][10][11]。
孟加拉国于2014年设立了Swatch of No-Ground海洋保护区以保护中华白海豚及其他物种[13];中国大陆先后设立了厦门和珠江口2个国家级自然保护区, 以及江门、汕头、湛江、潮州、饶平等5个省级或市级保护区, 广西合浦儒艮国家级自然保护区也将中华白海豚列为主要保护对象[7];香港通过设立沙洲及龍鼓洲海岸公園等海洋公园的形式来划定保护范围[3]。
