Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) – amerykański satelita do obserwacji Słońca. Jedenasta misja w ramach programu Small Explorer (SMEX), będącego częścią większego programu Explorer[1].
28 czerwca 2013 roku o 01:27 UTC z bazy amerykańskich sił powietrznych Vandenberg Air Force Base w Kalifornii wystartował samolot Orbital L-1011 z dołączoną do niego rakietą Pegasus XL. Cała operacja przebiegła zgodnie z planem – dokładnie godzinę po starcie, na wysokości prawie 12 kilometrów samolot uwolnił rakietę, a od niej z kolei, po 13 minutach i 6 sekundach lotu, odłączył się IRIS[1].
Sonda została umieszczona na orbicie o perygeum 620 i apogeum 670 km. Sonda porusza się po orbicie heliosynchronicznej. To oznacza, że satelita przelatuje niemal dokładnie nad oboma biegunami, a nad równikiem pojawia się o tej samej godzinie lokalnego czasu. Taki tor lotu umożliwia długie – nawet ośmiomiesięczne – nieprzerwane śledzenie naszej Gwiazdy Dziennej.
Naukowcy dzięki nowej sondzie zamierzają znaleźć odpowiedź na pytanie: dlaczego chromosfera Słońca osiąga temperaturę zaledwie dziesiątek tysięcy kelwinów, a rozciągająca się wokół niego korona – aż kilka milionów kelwinów[2]. Wszystko wskazuje na to, że rozwiązanie musi kryć się w procesach zachodzących w tak zwanej warstwie przejściowej, czyli strefie rozciągającej się pomiędzy chromosferą a koroną. To z tego obszaru pochodzi większość promieniowania UV emitowanego przez Słońce. Sonda została wyposażona w 20-centymetrowe zwierciadło i spektrograf. Obserwacje są prowadzone w ultrafiolecie. Rozdzielczość na poziomie 240 kilometrów i możliwość wykonywania zdjęć co około 10 sekund ma pozwolić na dokładne zbadanie, w jaki sposób w warstwie przejściowej przemieszcza się materia słoneczna i jak przekazywana jest energia w tym rejonie[2].
IRIS nie jest zbyt duży, ma masę niecałe 200 kilogramów, długość 2,1 metra i szerokość 3,7 metrów, uwzględniając rozłożone panele słoneczne. Zanim rozpoczęły właściwe obserwacje, kierujący nim zespół sprawdził jakość uzyskanych obrazów, kalibrował przyrządy i wykonał niezbędne testy. 17 lipca 2013 otworzyły się pokrywy teleskopu i IRIS zaczął śledzić zachowanie Słońca. Już pierwsze zdjęcia ukazały z niespotykaną dotychczas dokładnością zachowanie materii w warstwie przejściowej. Sonda uchwyciła obecność wielu cienkich, włóknistych struktur, ukazujących ogromne różnice temperatury. Być może dzięki satelicie IRIS zostanie rozwikłana jedna z tajemnic Słońca[2].
