Grand Union-kanalen på Commons

Grand Union-kanalen (Grand Union Canal) er en kunstig kanal og en del av kanalsystemet i Storbritannia. Den er 220 km lang, og har 166 sluser.[1] Den har armer som strekker seg til blant annet Leicester, Slough, Aylesbury, Wendover og Northampton.[2]

Grand Union var også det opprinnelige navnet for den delen som nå er en del av Leicester-linjen av den moderne Grand Union: sistnevnte er nå generelt referert til som Old Grand Union for å unngå tvetydighet.

Kanalen forbinder de to største byene i England, London og Birmingham. Den ble anlagt for å gi en mer direkte rute for varetransport mellom de to byene, som tidligere måtte gjøres over Themsen og Oxfordkanalen. Den ble konstruert ved at man knyttet sammen flere eksisterende kanaler: Grand Junction, Warwick og Napton og Warwick og Birmingham. Det er også flere grener, til bl.a. Leicester, Slough, Aylesbury, Wendover og Northampton.

Hovedseksjonen, mellom Brentford og Braunston, er den tidligere Grand Junction-kanalen. Den ble anlagt som en bred kanal, hvilket betyr at to smale lektere kan komme gjennom slusene samtidig, og at slusene kan ta imot brede lektere.

Resten av strekningen til Birmingham ble anlagt som en smal kanal, slik at de største lekterne ikke kommer videre, og bare én smal lekter kommer gjennom slusene av gangen. Fordi det var ønske om å få gjennom flere lektere, og å bruke brede lektere, ble det meste av den utvidet i 1930-årene.

De tre seksjonene mellom Norton Junction og elven Trent, kalt Leicester-linjen, er av varierende bredde. Fra Norton til Foxton er hele ruten en smal kanal, og fra nedenfor Foxton til Leicester en bred kanal. Fra Leicester til Trent brukes elven Soar, med brede sluser.
