Gordon Douglas «Doug» Jones (født 4. mai 1954 i Fairfield, Alabama) er en amerikansk jurist og demokratisk politiker, som i desember 2017 vant et spesialvalg til senator for Alabama. Han var senator til 2021.

Jones er den første demokraten som har blitt valgt til USAs senat fra Alabama siden Richard Shelby i 1992. Shelby sitter fortsatt i Senatet, men skiftet parti i 1994.

Biografi

Jones studerte statsvitenskap ved University of Alabama hvor han fikk en bachelor i 1976. I 1979 fikk han en doktorgrad i jus ved Samford University.

Han var assisterende statsadvokat 1980–1984 og deretter jurist hos et advokatfirma i Birmingham i Alabama 1984–1997. Fra 1997 til 2001 var han statsadvokat for det nordlige distriktet i Alabama. Som statsadvokat førte han sak mot to medlemmer av Ku Klux Klan for rollene deres i bombingen av en afroamerikansk baptistkirke i Birmingham i 1963 hvor fire personer ble drept.[3] Han gikk tilbake til jobben som privatpraktiserende advokat i 2001.

USAs senat

Den 12. desember 2017 ble han valgt til senator for Alabama i et spesialvalg for å fylle plassen til Jeff Sessions, som ble utnevnt til justisminister. Han beseiret den republikanske kandidaten Roy Moore, som ble støttet av presidenten Donald Trump, men som ikke var populær blant ledende republikanere i Alabama, etter at Moore hadde blitt utpekt av flere kvinner for seksuell trakassering og overgrep.

Jones ble innsatt den 3. januar 2018 og hans mandatperiode utløp 3. januar 2021.[4] Han etterfølges av republikaneren Tommy Tuberville som vant over Jones i valget i 2020.[5]

Politiske posisjoner

Redaksjonen i The Birmingham News har beskrevet Jones som en "moderat demokrat".[6] Senator Jones har sagt at folk ikke burde "forvente seg av [ham] å stemme kun for republikanerne eller demokratene".[7] Ifølge FiveThirtyEight, hadde Jones stemt i linje med president Donald Trumps posisjoner 43,2 prosent av tiden.[8]

Jones har blitt beskrevet som en økonomisk populist av Newsweek.[9]

Sosiale spørsmål

I et intervju med The Birmingham News sa han at han er i mot flere restriksjoner på abort, og mente at nåværende lover er tilstrekkelige.[10] Jones har også gitt støtte for likekjønnet ekteskap.[11]

Jones støtter noen våpenkontrolltiltak inkludert "strengere bakgrunnskontroller for våpensalg og å heve aldersgrensa for å kjøpe et våpen fra 18 til 21 år.[12]

Privatliv

Doug Jones giftet seg med Louise Jones i desember 1992. Paret har tre barn.[13] Han er medlem i United Methodist Church.[14]
