Wings at the Speed of Sound er det femte studioalbumet til Wings, gjeve ut 25. mars 1976 som oppfølgjaren til Venus and Mars. Det kom ut medan bandet var på sitt mest populære og nådde toppen av den amerikanske albumlista og andreplassen på den britiske. Begge singlane frå albumet nådde Topp 5 på både den amerikanske og britiske singellista, og «Silly Love Songs» gjekk heilt til topps i USA.

Albumet vart spelt inn og kom ut midt under den særs suksessrike Wings over the World-turneen til bandet og songar frå albumet vart spelte på turneen etter albumet kom ut. Versjonar av «Let 'Em In», «Silly Love Songs» og «Beware My Love» vart gjevne ut på konsertalbumet Wings over America, som kom i desember 1976.

Som ein reaksjon til kritikarane som meinte at Wings berre var eit band for Paul McCartney, song alle medlemmane i bandet minst ein song kvar på albumet, og to av songane på albumet er skrivne av andre medlemmar enn McCartney-paret, eller i lag med dei.

Innspeling

Etter ei rekkje konsertar i Australia i november 1975, tok Wings ein pause frå turneen for å feriere med familiane sine, og i januar 1976 leigde dei tid i Abbey Road Studios i London for å spele inn Wings at the Speed of Sound. Det var det første albumet McCartney hadde spelt inn i England aleine sidan Red Rose Speedway. På grunn av turneen fekk ikkje Wings høve til å spele inn andre stader. Mot slutten av februar var albumet fullført og Wings drog ut på turné att.

Utgjeving og mottaking

Wings at the Speed of Sound kom ut seint i mars 1976 og fekk ikkje så god omtale som dei førre albuma av pressa. Albumet selde likevel godt og nådde andreplassen i Storbritannia (og vart det fjerde mestselde albumet i Storbritannia i 1976). I USA låg albumet sju veker på toppen av albumlista gjennom sommaren. Wings at the Speed of Sound selde 3,5 millionar eksemplar verda over.

Mykje av suksessen til albumet kom av dei to store hitsinglane. «Silly Love Songs» kom ut i april 1976 og vart ein av dei mestseljande singlane det året. Dette vart følgd opp i juli av «Let 'Em In», som òg gjekk høgt på singellistene.

Andre utgåver

I 1993 vart Wings at the Speed of Sound nymastra og gjeve ut på CD som ein del av serien The Paul McCartney Collection. Det kom då med bonusspora «Walking in the Park with Eloise» av The Country Hams, B-sidene «Bridge on the River Suite» og «Sally G» . Alle desse var spelte inn i Nashville i 1974.

I november 2014 vart albumet gjeve ut på ny av Hear Music/Concord Music Group i rekkje forskjellige utgåver:^[10]

Standardutgåve: 2-CD; det originale albumet på den førsteplata og sju bonusspor på den andre
Luksusutgåve: 2-CD/1-DVD; CD-ane har same innhaldet som standardutgåva, ei bok med fotografi og nye intervju med McCartney. DVD-en inneheld filmklipp frå tida då albumet kom ut og vart spelt inn.
