Den pontisk-kaspiske steppa

Steppa strekkjer seg om lag frå Dnepr til Uralelva og frå Svartehavet til Kaukasus i sør til den tempererte lauvskogen og taigaen i nord.

Den pontisk-kaspiske steppa er namnet på eit vidstrekt steppelandskap i området nord for Svartehavet og så langt aust som til Kaspihavet, frå sentrale område av Ukraina gjennom sørvestlege delar av Russland til vestlege område av Kasakhstan. Ho er ein del av den større Eurasiatiske steppa og grensar mot Den kasakhstanske steppa i aust.

Området omfattar Skytia og Sarmatia frå antikken.

Uttrykket den ponto-kaspiske regionen vert nytta i biogeografi for planter og dyr på desse steppene og om dyr frå Svartehavet, Kaspihavet og Azovhavet.

Geografi og økologi

Den pontiske steppa dekkjer eit areal på 994 000 km² og strekkjer seg frå austlege område av Romania over dei sørlege områda av Moldova, Ukraina, Russland og nordvestlege delar av Kasakhstan til Uralfjella. Den pontiske steppa grensar til Den austeuropeiske skogsteppa, som er ei overgangssone mellom grasslettene i sør og den tempererte lauvskogen i nord. I sør strekkjer den pontiske steppa seg til Svartehavet, bortsett frå Krimhalvøya og dei vestlege Kaukasusfjella, der Den krimske submiddelhavsskogen definerer den sørlege grensa til sletta. Steppa strekkjer seg vestover til Kaspihavet i Dagestan, men den tørrare kapsiske senkinga ligg mellom Den pontiske steppa og den nordvestlege og nordlege kysten av Kaspihavet. Den kasakhstanske steppa grensar til Den pontiske steppa i søraust.

Dei ponto-kaspiske sjøane er restane etter Turgaisjøen, som var ein del av Den pannoniske sjøen som strekte seg sør og aust for Uralfjella og dekte mykje av det som i dag er Den vestsibiriske sletta i mesozoikum og kenozoikum.
