Gauthier Defreyne (Oostende, 6 januari 1989) is een Belgisch politicus voor Open Vld.

Levensloop

Defreyne startte in de lokale politiek als voorzitter van Jong VLD. Zo richtte hij in 2016 de jongerenafdeling op.

Bij de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen van 2018 werd Open VLD de winnaar van de verkiezingen. De liberalen stegen met 7,4 procent en waren met tien zetels de grootste partij in Gistel. Met 2.302 voorkeurstemmen won vader Roland Defreyne de onderlinge strijd met toenmalig burgemeester Bart Halewyck (1.521 stemmen). Niets leek in de weg te staan om Roland opnieuw burgemeester te maken. Althans, dat dacht iedereen.

Omwille van een voorakkoord met CD&V waarin stond dat de burgemeestersjerp naar Halewyck ging, kon Defreyne geen burgemeester worden. Ook nieuwe onderhandelingen met CD&V brachten geen soelaas. De achterban van Open VLD kon enkel akkoord gaan met de sjerp en dus verliet Roland het CD&V-schip, op zoek naar een andere coalitie. Ver moest Defreyne niet zoeken, want al snel werd met N-VA en SPA een akkoord bereikt dat Open VLD de burgemeestersjerp en 3 schepenen opleverde.[1]

Omwille van het voorakkoord werd niet Roland maar Gauthier Defreyne, die 2de meeste stemmen behaalde, verkozen tot burgemeester van stad Gistel.[2]
