Populiacija (angl. population) – 1) visi tam tikroje šalyje ar teritorijoje gyvenantys žmonės; 2) vienos rūšies individų grupė, gyvenanti tam tikroje teritorijoje; 3) tiriamųjų objektų generalinė aibė, iš kurios sudaroma imtis.

Visi Žemėje gyvenantys žmonės sudaro pasaulinę žmonių populiaciją.

Organizmų populiacija

Visi Žemės organizmai skirstomi į daugybę rūšių. Viena nuo kitos atskirtos (kalnų, upių ir kitų kliūčių) tos pačios rūšies individų grupės vadinamos populiacijomis. Kiekviena populiacija prisitaikiusi prie savo aplinkos ir užima tam tikrą ekologinę nišą, kuri apibūdinama tokiais veiksniais, kaip jų gyvenamoji aplinka, maistas, konkurentai, parazitai, ją medžiojantys grobuonys, prisitaikymas prie negyvosios aplinkos veiksnių.

Dažnai viena rūšis būna sudaryta iš daugelio populiacijų, pavyzdžiui, beržai, stirnos, kiaulpienės ir kt. Tačiau yra ir tokių rūšių, kurių egzistuoja tik viena populiacija – tai retos arba nykstančios rūšys, pavyzdžiui, stumbrai, urvinės antys, elniavabaliai ir kt.

Kiekviena populiacija yra prisitaikiusi prie savo gyvenamosios aplinkos. Skiriamos keturios buveinės:

  • vanduo;
  • dirvožemis;
  • sausumos paviršius;
  • kitas organizmas.

Gyvenamajai aplinkai būdingos tam tikros sąlygos – temperatūra, krituliai, cheminės medžiagos ir kt.

Populiacijos dydis (jos individų skaičius ir populiacijos tankis) apibūdina kiekvieną populiaciją, kuri gali mažėti arba augti, priklausomai nuo individų emigracijos, epidemijų, nepalankių negyvosios aplinkos veiksnių ar maisto stokos.

Kiekvienos rūšies populiacijai būdingas gana didelis dauginimosi potencialas. Tačiau iš tiesų populiacijos ilgai gausėti negali, nes tam ima priešintis aplinka, kuri niekada nebūna idealiai palanki. Populiacijai augant, ateina momentas, kai individams ima trūkti maisto, erdvės, didėja tarpusavio konkurencija, padaugėja plėšrūnų ir parazitų. Visa tai trukdo populiacijai plėstis ir yra vadinama aplinkos pasipriešinimu, kuris pasireiškia tuo, kad padidėja mirtingumas ir sumažėja gimstamumas, bei imigracija ir emigracija.

Kartais populiacija staiga pagausėja ir tampa nepaprastai didelė, tai vadinama demografiniu sprogimu, kuris dažniausia įvyksta tada, kai tam tikrą rūšį perkelia, ir naujos sąlygos būna labai palankios.
