Tiestas kovojo su savo broliu Atrėju dėl Mikėnų sosto. Tiestas taip pat turėjo romaną su Atrėjo žmona Aerope. Atrėjas keršydamas už romaną užmušė pirmagimį Tiesto sūnų. Tiestas prisiekė atkeršyti.

Orakulas išpranašavo Tiestui, kad jei jis susilauks sūnaus su savo dukra Pelopija, šis užmuš Atrėją. Tiestas taip ir padarė, gimė Egistas, kuris vėliau užmušė Atrėją. Kai Egistas gimė, jį paliko motina, kadangi gėdijosi savo kraujomaišos nusikaltimo. Egistą rado piemuo, kuris kūdikį nunešė Atrėjui, šis užaugino kaip savo sūnų. Kai Egistas suaugo Tiestas papasokojo jam teisybę, tai sužinojęs Egistas nužudė Atrėją.
