차투랑가

차투랑가(산스크리트어: चतुरङ्ग)는 인도의 보드 게임으로, 체스나 장기(쇼기 및 샹치), 막룩과 같은 현대 보드 게임의 공통 조상이다. 6세기 경 인도 굽타 제국 때 발달한 것이다. 산스크리트어로 "차투랑가"는 "4지 차림"이라는 뜻으로, 서사시 등에서 "군대"의 의미라는 뜻이다. 7세기 경에는 사산 제국에 샤트란지라는 이름으로 전파되었으며, 이것이 다시 중세 유럽으로 전해져 체스의 기원이 되었다.

두 명이 경기하는 방식과 네 명이 경기하는 방식이 있다. 네명이 경기하는 게임은 차투라지로도 불린다.

정확한 규칙은 문헌에 따라 다르기 때문에 논쟁이 있다. 체스 역사가들은 차투랑가의 규칙이 이를 계승한 보드 게임인 샤트란지와 유사할 것이라 추측한다.

규칙

  • 라자(Raja): 왕. 체스의 킹에 해당하며 움직임은 같다.
  • 만트리(Mantri): 고문. 체스의 퀸에 해당하나 훨씬 약한 기물로, 대각선으로 1칸씩만 움직인다. 샹치의 사(士)와 샤트란지의 퍼즈와 같다.
  • 라타(Ratha): 차(車). 체스의 룩에 해당하며 움직임은 같다.
  • 가자(Gaja): 상(象). 여러 움직임의 설이 있다.
    1. 대각선으로 2칸 움직이며 중간의 말은 개의치 않는다. 가자가 갈 수 있는 곳은 판에서 8분의 1 뿐이며, 따라서 서로를 잡을 수 없다. .[1]
    2. 쇼기의 은장과 같은 행마. (비루니의 책에 들어있다.)
  • 아스바(Ashva): 마(馬). 체스의 나이트에 해당하며 움직임은 같다.
  • 파다티: 보병. 움직임과 잡는 법이 체스의 폰와 같다.
