モーモス（古希: Μῶμος, Mōmos、英: Momus 「非難」の意）とは、ギリシア神話に登場する神である。非難や皮肉を擬人化したもの。長母音を省略してモモスとも表記される。ローマ神話ではクエレッラ（ラテン語: Querella, 悲嘆、苦情の意）と同一視される[1]。

神話

ヘーシオドスの『神統記』によると、夜の女神ニュクスが相手を必要とせずに生んだ子供の1人であり[2]、モロス（定業）、ケール（死の運命）、タナトス（死）、ヒュプノス（眠り）、オネイロス（夢）、ヘスペリスたち、モイラ3姉妹（クロートー、ラケシス、アトロポス）、ネメシス（義憤）、アパテー（欺瞞）、ピロテース（愛欲）、ゲーラス（老い）、エリス（争い）と兄弟[3]。

キケローは『神々の本性について』の中で、幽冥の神エレボスとニュクスの子供たちの1人としてモーモスに相当するクエレッラの名前を挙げている[1]。

散逸した叙事詩『キュプリア』によると、10年にも及ぶトロイア戦争はモーモスの建議によって起きた。すなわちゼウスは雷か大洪水を用いて人間を滅ぼそうとしたが、モーモスはこれに異を唱え、女神テティスとペーレウスの結婚および絶世の美女ヘレネーの誕生によって大戦争を起こし、人間の数を減らすことを勧めた[4]。

モーモスは『イソップ寓話集』において、非難される点がない完璧なものは存在しないという寓話にも登場している。ゼウスが牛を、プロメーテウスが人間を、アテーナーが家を作ったとき、判定者に選ばれたモーモスは「牛は角で突くところが見えないから目を角の上に、人間は悪い奴か気付けないから心を外側に、家は悪い奴が隣に住んでもすぐに引っ越しできないから車の上に建てるべきだった」と非難した。ゼウスは腹を立てモーモスをオリュンポスから追放した[5]。
