Si comprehendis non est Deus

Si comprehendis non est Deus è una locuzione latina usata da Agostino di Ippona nel Sermone 117.3.5[1] che significa: "se comprendi, non è Dio".[2]

Tale concetto era già stato introdotto nel Sermone 52, in cui Agostino afferma:

«Quid ergo dicamus, fratres, de Deo? Si enim quod vis dicere, si cepisti, non est Deus: si comprehendere potuisti, aliud pro Deo comprehendisti. Si quasi comprehendere potuisti, cogitatione tua te decepisti. Hoc ergo non est, si comprehendisti: si autem hoc est, non comprehendisti. Quid ergo vis loqui, quod comprehendere non potuisti?[3]»

«Che cosa dunque diremo di Dio, fratelli? Se infatti ciò che vuoi dire lo hai capito, non è Dio. Se sei stato capace di capirlo, hai compreso una realtà diversa da quella di Dio. Se ti pare d'essere stato capace di comprenderlo, ti sei ingannato a causa della tua immaginazione. Se dunque lo hai compreso, Dio non è così; se invece è così, non lo hai compreso. Perché dunque vuoi parlare di ciò che non hai potuto comprendere?[4]»

Il passaggio rappresenta il fondamento concettuale della Teologia negativa cristiana. Nel Noncognitivismo teologico, l'intero passaggio è considerato privo di significato razionale, alla stessa stregua di un paradosso, un gioco linguistico o un'espressione poetica[5][6].

Papa Benedetto XVI, nella sua Lettera Enciclica Deus caritas est[7][8][9], in un passo in cui commenta il tema dell'apparente incomprensibilità della sofferenza nel libro di Giobbe, fa uso dell'espressione di Agostino per indicare come la razionalità sia insufficiente per spiegare le concezioni di fede della religione cattolica.

Nel suo intervento alla summer school 2008 della Fondazione Magna Carta, "Religioni, verità, libertà", il cardinale Angelo Scola, Patriarca di Venezia, paragona il "si comprehendis, non est Deus" agostiniano ad un'espressione di Abū Bakr, primo califfo dell'Islam nel settimo secolo:[10]

«Sia lode a Colui che non ha dato alle sue creature altre vie per conoscerlo se non la loro incapacità di conoscerlo»

In La via della verità[11], Rino Fisichella sostiene che «l'insegnamento di Gesù non potrebbe mai esser espresso in maniera coerente dallo scritto» e riconduce l'espressione agostiniana alle parole del dottore della Chiesa Gregorio Nazianzeno secondo cui

«È impossibile esprimere Dio, ma è ancora più impossibile comprenderlo»
