9 Metis (/ˈmiːtəs/ bahasa Yunani: Μήτις) adalah satu dari banyak asteroid di sabuk utama yang cukup besar. Metis tersusun atas besi-nikel silikat dan logam, dan mungkin merupakan sisa inti dari asteroid besar yang hancur karena benturan pada masa lampau.[10] Metis diperkirakan bermassa tidak lebih dari setengah persen dari total massa di sabuk asteroid.[3]

Penemuan dan penamaan

Metis ditemukan oleh Andrew Graham pada 25 April 1848, di Observatorium Markree Irlandia; yang merupakan asteroid pertama yang dia temukan.[11] Hingga 7 Agustus 2008, Metis merupakan satu-satunya asteroid yang ditemukan dengan melakukan pengamatan di Irlandia, di mana setelah 160 tahun penemuan Metis, Dave McDonald dari Observatorium J69 Menemukan 2008 TM9.[12]

Nama asteroid ini berasal dari tokoh mitologi Metis, seorang Titan dan Okeanid, serta putri dari of Thetis dan Okeanos.[13] Nama Thetis juga sempat dipertimbangkan, namun ditolak (yang kemudian dipakai untuk 17 Thetis).
