Lecythidoideae, je glavna potporodica unutar porodice Lecythidaceae, poznata po drveću tropskih šuma. To su tropska drveća s velikim, složenim cvjetovima i velikim sjemenkama.[1]

Opis

Oblik: Veliko drveće s jednostavnim, naizmjeničnim listovima. Cvjetovi: Veliki i složeni; često asimetrični s mnogo prašnika (daju “pahuljast” izgled). Cvjetovi su dvospolni. Plod: Različit – kapsula ili bobica; sjemenke obično velike, drvenaste i bez endosperma. Rasprostranjenost: Tropska Južna Amerika, Afrika i Azija. Posebnost: Cvjetovi i plodovi vrlo su karakteristični, s adaptacijama za specifične oprašivače. Osnovni broj kromosoma kod Barringtonioideae je n = 13, dok je kod neotropskih Lecythidoideae n = 17 (Prance & Mori 1979).[1]
