פול ג'יי סמית' (באנגלית: Paul J. Smith;‏ 30 באוקטובר 1906 – 25 בינואר 1985) היה מלחין וכנר אמריקאי הידוע בעיקר בזכות עבודתו בדיסני.[1]

ביוגרפיה

סמית' נולד בקאלומט, מישיגן ב-30 באוקטובר 1906. אביו, ג'וזף סמית', החל ללמד אותו לנגן במגוון כלי נגינה החל בפסנתר בגיל ארבע וכינור בגיל שבע. כמו כן הוא גם ניגן בחצוצרה ובויולה, ועד גיל 12 ניגן בתוף בס עבור הלהקה העירונית. הניסיון שלו עזר לו להשיג ידע מעשי יותר על התזמורת והוא המשיך להיות מנצח בתיכון. עם סיום התיכון, הוא למד מוזיקה במכללה של איידהו מ-1923 עד 1925 לפני שהתקבל לקונסרבטוריון בוש בשיקגו, אילינוי. יכולותיו בתיאוריה ובהלחנה זיכו אותו במלגה ללימוד תורת המוזיקה בבית הספר ג'וליארד, עם זאת, לא ברור אם אי פעם פנה להזמנה זו.[2]

משנת 1962 עד 1963, הוא הלחין מוזיקה לקומדיית המצבים "Leave It to Beaver". ב"פנטסיה" הוא אחד מעובדי האולפן שבתזמורת. הוא גם חיבר את מוזיקת הרקע לכמעט כל סרטי הסדרה "True-Life Adventures".[3]

בשנת 1950, סמית' ואוליבר ולאס הלחינו את הפרטיטורה המוזיקלית לסרט "סינדרלה".

שותפתו ועמיתתו העיקרית של סמית' הייתה הייזל "גיל" ג'ורג', שכתבה את השיר לסרט "האור ביער" (1958) יחד איתו[4] ולורנס ווטקין. עוד אחד ממשתפי הפעולה של סמית' היה ג'ורג' בראנס שעבד איתו במספר סרטים. סמית' זכה בפרס אוסקר למוזיקה המקורית הטובה ביותר עם לי הרליין ונד וושינגטון עבור הסרט "פינוקיו", זו הייתה זכייתו הראשונה והיחידה באוסקר. סמית' קיבל שבע מועמדויות נוספות לאוסקר עבור "שלגיה ושבעת הגמדים", "סלודוס אמיגוס", "ניצחון באמצעות כוח אווירי", "שלושת הקבלרוס", "שירת הדרום", "סינדרלה" ו"פרי".

לאחר כשלושה עשורים מוצלחים עם אולפני וולט דיסני, בהם חיבר בין היתר מוזיקה לכמעט 70 סרטי הנפשה קצרים, סמית' פרש מהחברה בשנת 1962. הוא נפטר ב-25 בינואר 1985 בגלנדייל, קליפורניה, ממחלת אלצהיימר בהיותו בן 78. כעשור לאחר מותו, בשנת 1994, הוא קיבל את התואר אגדת דיסני.
