סרט אמנויות לחימה הוא תת-סוגה של סרט פעולה. סרטי אמנויות לחימה מכילים מספר רב של קרבות בסגנונות אמנויות לחימה שונות בין הדמויות (לרוב מן המזרח). הקרבות בדרך כלל מהווים חלק עיקרי בסרט ולעיתים קרובות הם תורמים להתפתחות הדמויות. הסרטים בדרך כלל כוללים סוגים אחרים של פעולה, כגון קרבות יד-ביד, פעלולים, מרדפים וקרבות ירי.[1][2][3]

ברוס לי הפך ל"אייקון" של סרטי לחימה.
כמו עם סרטי אקשן אחרים, סרטי אמנויות לחימה נשלטים על ידי פעולה בדרגות שונות; ברבים מן הסרטים ישנו פיתוח מועט של הדמויות ועלילות קצרות והם מתרכזים באופן כמעט בפעולה. בסרטים אחרים בז'אנר, יש עלילות יצירתיות ומורכבות יותר ודמויות מפותחות עם סיפור מורכב.[4] הסרטים בעלי העלילה המורכבת נחשבים בדרך כלל לאמנותיים יותר, אבל הסרטים האחרים, בעלי העלילה הפשוטה יותר הם בעלי הצלחה מסחרית וגם המועדפים על ידי חובבי הז'אנר.[5][6] אחד הסרטים ההוליוודיים הראשונים המעסיק את השימוש של אמנויות לחימה היה הסרט בהלה בצוק השחור משנת 1955.[7][8][9][10]

דמויות רבות בסרטי אמנויות לחימה הם אמני לחימה אשר לרוב מגולמים על ידי אמני לחימה אמיתיים. אם זה אינו המקרה, השחקנים מתאמנים באומניות הלחימה לקראת תפקידיהם, או הבמאי יכול להסתמך על אקשן מסוגנן או על טריקים של צילום כגון זוויות צילום, עריכה, כפילים ו- computer-generated imagery. טרמפולינות וקרשי קפיצה יכולים לשמש כדי להגדיל את הגובה של קפיצות. מעת לעת גם אמני לחימה אמיתיים משתמשים בטכניקות אלה, תלוי בסגנון האקשן של הסרט.[11]

במהלך שנות ה-70 וה-80 של המאה ה-20, הסרטים בעלי הנוכחות המרבית היו מאות סרטי קונג פו וסרטי נינג'ה אשר דובבו לאנגלית. הסרטים הופקו על ידי האחים שו, גודפרי הו, ומפיקים אחרים מהונג קונג. סרטים אלו שודרו באופן נרחב בסופי השבוע בטלוויזיה באמריקה הצפונית. זמנים אלו בטלוויזיה היו לעיתים קרובות ידועות כקולנוע קונג פו, תיאטרון חגורה שחורה, או וריאציות שונות. כלול ברשימה זו של סרטים מסחריים קלאסיקות כמו "הבוס הגדול", "מאסטר שיכור", "מתאגרף אחד חמוש".

סרטי אמנויות לחימה מופקים בכל העולם, אבל הז'אנר נשלט על ידי קולנוע הפעולה של הונג קונג, ששיאם משנת 1971 עם עלייתו של ברוס לי עד אמצע שנות ה-1990 עם ירידה כללית בתעשייה.[12] שחקנים בולטים בז'אנר כוללים את ג'קי צ'אן, ג'ט לי, דוני ין וסאמו האנג.

נשים אף הן ממלאות תפקידים ראשיים בז'אנר, כולל שחקניות כמו מישל יאו, אנג'לה מאו, סינתיה רות'רוק.[13][14][15] בנוסף, תעשיית האנימציה המערבית אימצה את הז'אנר ופרצה עם סרט הזיכיון קונג-פו פנדה, בכיכובם של ג'ק בלאק ואנג'לינה ג'ולי, של החברה הבינלאומית DreamWorks Animation.
