מרסל אופולס (בצרפתית: Marcel Ophüls; נולד ב-1 בנובמבר 1927) הוא במאי קולנוע יהודי-צרפתי, הידוע בסרטיו התיעודיים. סרטו "מלון טרמינוס" זכה בפרס האוסקר לסרט התיעודי הטוב ביותר לשנת 1988.

קורות חיים

אופולס נולד בגרמניה בשם האנס מרסל אופנהיימר למשפחה יהודית שעסקה בקולנוע ובתיאטרון. אביו, מקס אופולס היה במאי קולנוע, ואמו הילדגרד ואל הייתה שחקנית. לאחר עליית הנאצים לשלטון בגרמניה עבר מקס אופולס לצרפת, והיה שם לבמאי קולנוע מוביל. לאחר כיבוש צרפת על ידי הנאצים בשנת 1940 הצליחו אופולס ומשפחתו להימלט, ובסופו של דבר הגיעו לארצות הברית, שם היה מקס אופולס לבמאי בהוליווד. מרסל אופולס למד בתיכון בארצות הברית, ולאחר מכן שירת בצבא ארצות הברית במסגרת כוחות הכיבוש האמריקנים ביפן. ב-1950 שב עם משפחתו לפריז ושם החל בקריירה קולנועית. הוא שימש כעוזר לבמאי בסרטיהם של ז'וליין דוביבייה ואנאטול ליטוואק, ובסרטו של ג'ון יוסטון "מולין רוז'" בשנת 1952. כן שימש כעוזר במאי בסרטו של אביו, "לולה מונטז" (1955), כשהוא נקרא בשם הנעורים של אמו, "מרסל ואל". כן ביים סרט טלוויזיה בשנת 1958 וסרט דוקומנטרי קצר בשנת 1960.

בשנת 1962 ביים אפיזודה בסרט "אהבה בגיל עשרים", לצד במאים כפרנסואה טריפו, אנדז'יי ויידה, רנצו רוסליני ושינטרו אישיהארה. הסרט זכה להצלחה והיה מועמד לפרס דב הזהב בפסטיבל ברלין. בשנת 1964 ביים קומדיה בשם "קליפת בננה" בכיכובם של ז'אן מורו וז'אן-פול בלמונדו, שזכתה להצלחה מסחרית רבה. בשנת 1965 ביים מותחן נוסף בכיכובו של אדי קונסטנטין. לאחר מכן עבר לבימוי סרטים תיעודיים. בשנת 1967 ביים את סרט התעודה "מינכן" שעסק במשבר מינכן בשנת 1938. היה זה סרטו התיעודי הראשון, שסימן מעבר לסוגה שונה, ונושאים שונים ורציניים בהרבה, שהפכו להיות מזוהים עמו בהמשך הקריירה שלו.

בשנת 1969 יצא אל האקרנים אחד מסרטיו החשובים ביותר, "הצער והחמלה", שבחן את קורותיה של העיר הצרפתית קלרמון-פראן בתקופת הכיבוש הנאצי, והעמיד אל מול מיתוס ה"רזיסטאנס" הצרפתי, שראה את קורות מלחמת העולם השנייה כסאגה של התנגדות, את דמותם של הצרפתים כמשתפי פעולה ואת משטר צרפת של וישי כמשטר שסייע לגרמנים בפשע השמדת היהודים. הסרט זכה להצלחה ביקורתית וקופתית, היה מועמד לפרס האוסקר כסרט התיעודי הטוב ביותר בשנת 1972 וזכה בפרס באפט"א כתוכנית הטלוויזיה הזרה ביותר בשנת 1972. הסרט כלל גם אלמנטים צורניים חדשניים בסוגת הסרט התיעודי - הוא שילב ראיונות שערך הבמאי עצמו עם קטעי ארכיון בצורה שטרם הוצגה בעבר, ונמנע מהבאת קריינות דומיננטית כקול רקע המהווה למעשה קולו של הבמאי, דבר שהיה נהוג בסרטים הדוקומנטריים עד אז.[1]

אופולס המשיך בעשייה דוקומנטרית במהלך השנים שלאחר מכן. ראוי במיוחד לציון סרטו "זיכרון הצדק" (1976) בו השווה בין מעשי הנאצים בצרפת, הצרפתים באלג'יר והאמריקאים בווייטנאם. מאבקים משפטיים הותירו אותו מרושש, ובמהלך שנות השבעים ושנות השמונים עסק אף מעט במשחק, וכן הרצה באוניברסיטה.

בשנת 1988 הוקרן סרטו "מלון טרמינוס" העוסק בקורותיו של הפושע הנאצי קלאוס ברבי המכונה "הקצב מליון". הסרט זכה להצלחה רבה, זכה בפרס האוסקר לסרט התיעודי הטוב ביותר, ולפרסים רבים נוספים. בשנת 1994 ביים את סרטו האחרון "הצרות שראינו" העוסק במלחמה בבלקן. מאז לא עסק עוד בבימוי.
