דניס מקאליסטר ריצ'י (באנגלית: Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie ‏; 9 בספטמבר 1941 – 12 באוקטובר 2011) היה חוקר מדעי המחשב אמריקאי הידוע בתרומתו והשפעתו על שפות התכנות ALTRAN ,B ,BCPL ,C ועל מערכת ההפעלה UNIX.

חייו

ריצ'י נולד בברונקסוויל, ניו יורק וסיים תואר באוניברסיטת הרווארד בפיזיקה ובמתמטיקה שימושית.[1] בשנת 1967 התחיל לעבוד במרכז מחקר מדעי המחשב של מעבדות בל. בתחילת שנות השבעים של המאה ה-20 פיתח ריצ'י את שפת C על בסיס שפת B (שהיא עצמה התפתחה משפת BCPL). יחד עם קן תומפסון, הוא השתמש בשפת C כדי לפתח את ליבת מערכת ההפעלה UNIX.[2] למערכת ההפעלה נודעו השפעות עצומות על עולם מערכות ההפעלה, בין היתר כבסיס למערכת ההפעלה המודרנית לינוקס ובהטמעת השימוש במערכת הקבצים ההיררכית.

בספרו "The C Programming Language", שנכתב יחד עם בריאן קרניגהאן, פרסם תוכנית הדגמה המדפיסה את המחרוזת "hello, world" למסך, ובכך מיסד מסורת שימוש בתוכנית Hello world כדי להדגים תחביר של שפת תכנות מסוימת.

בשנת 1983 קיבל ריצ'י את פרס טיורינג ואת פרס ACM למערכת תוכנה יחד עם קן תומפסון על מימוש מערכת ההפעלה UNIX.

ב-12 באוקטובר 2011 נפטר בביתו בניו ג'רזי בגיל 70.
