המגפה הגדולה (באנגלית: Great Plague) הייתה מגפת דבר שפקדה את העיר לונדון בירת אנגליה בין השנים 1665–1666, ובמהלכה מתו כ-100,000 מתושבי העיר (20%) על פני תקופה של כ-18 חודשים[1][2]. למעשה, אחוז תושבי העיר שמתו במהלך המגפה היה קטן מאלה שמתו במהלך מגפת המוות השחור שפגע באירופה בין השנים 1347–1353. המגפה זכתה בהמשך לכינוי "המגפה הגדולה" בעיקר בשל היותה ההתפרצות הנרחבת האחרונה של מחלת הדבר באנגליה במהלך תקופה של 400 שנה שנודעה כתקופת הפנדמיה השנייה, אשר החלה בשנת 1331 ונמשכה עד 1750[3][4].

פרוץ המגפה

במהלך המאה ה-17 פגעו מספר מגפות בעיר לונדון. בשנת 1603 פגעה מגפה בעיר והרגה כ-38,000 מתושביה, בשנת 1625 הרגה מגפה כ-63,000 מתושבי העיר, ובשנת 1636 הרגה מגפה כ-23,000 מתושבי העיר[5].

ככל הנראה המגפה הגיעה לאנגליה מהולנד, בספינות שהביאו כותנה מאמסטרדם. העיר אמסטרדם עצמה נפגעה במגפה בין השנים 1663–1664 ומתו כ-50,000 מתושביה[6].

המגפה פגעה לראשונה באזור המספנות של נמל לונדון במזרח העיר, באזור כנסיית סנט גיילס שבשדות. באזור זה חיו עניים רבים בתנאים סוציו אקונומיים נמוכים, וייתכן שפטירות קודמות כתוצאה מהמגפה לא נרשמו או לא נרשמו ככאלה. התיעוד הראשון למגפה הוא מותה של רבקה אנדרוז ב-12 באפריל 1665.

ביולי 1665 הגיעה המגפה אל העיר לונדון עצמה. המלך צ'ארלס השני ומשפחתו עזבו את הבירה ועברו לאוקספורדשייר. נציגי הרבעים השונים של הסיטי של לונדון (האלדרמן) נשארו למלא את תפקידם כמו גם הלורד ראש העיר של לונדון, סר ג'ון לורנס, אולם מרבית החנויות והעסקים נסגרו עקב בריחת התושבים מהעיר.

בעיר נשארו אנשי הדת, הרופאים והרוקחים, אשר ראו מחובתם להישאר ולטפל בחולים. בין הנשארים המועטים בעיר היו סמיואל פיפס והנרי פו.

פיפס תיעד ביומנו את מראות המגפה, ואחיינו של פו, דניאל דפו, פרסם בשנת 1722 את "תיעוד שנת המגפה"(אנ') - ספר דמיוני המבוסס על יומניו של פו.

פגיעת המגפה בעיר

סמיואל פיפס מתאר את התקופה ביומנו:

נשארתי בסיטי עד שמספר המתים מידי שבוע הגיע ל-7,400, מהם 6,000 מתו מהמגפה, אין נשמע בעיר רעש מלבד צלצול פעמוני הכנסיות יום ולילה; עד אשר יכולתי להלך לאורך רחוב לאמבר[7] ולא לראות יותר מעשרים איש בעוברי מקצה אחד של הרחוב עד לקצה השני, ולא יותר מחמישים אנשים בהולכי עד הבורסה המלכותי; עד שמשפחות שלמות, בנות עשר או שתים עשרה נפשות יחד נפטרו כולם; עד שרופאי שלי, ד"ר ברנט, אשר לקח על עצמו להגן עלי מן המגפה, ואשר שרד אף שביתו שלו נאטם, אולם לבסוף נפטר בעצמו מן המגפה; עד אשר הלילות, אף שהתארכו, לא היו ארוכים דיים לקבור את כל גופות הנפטרים ביום הקודם.

הרופאים שנותרו בעיר ניסו לרפא את החולים בלא הצלחה. מספר רופאים נשכרו על ידי שלטונות הסיטי, אשר במקביל הסדירו את קבורת הנפטרים. בשל מספר הנפטרים הרב, ועל אף הניסיון לבצע קבורה מסודרת, נקברו רבים בקברי אחים. במקביל הורו שלטונות הסיטי על הרג הכלבים והחתולים בעיר - החלטה אשר הביאה להגברת המגפה מאחר שאוכלוסיית העכברושים ועליה הפרעושים נושאי החיידק, גדלה. דניאל דפו העריך כי כ-40,000 כלבים וכ-200,000 חתולים הומתו.

השלטונות הורו על הדלקת מדורות ברחובות, אשר בערו יום ולילה, מתוך אמונה שהמחלה עוברת בריחות רעים, וכי המדורות יפיגו ריחות אלה. במדורות נשרפו תבלינים כגון פלפל שחור ולבונה בניסיון להפיג את הריחות, ותושבי העיר נקראו לעשן טבק.

המגפה פגעה בעיקר בעיר לונדון, אך גם הכפרים שסביבה נפגעו, ומתו כ-75% מתושביהם.

באביב 1665 החל לעלות מספר הנפטרים בהדרגה. מספר המתים עלה מ-1,000 נפטרים בשבוע ביולי 1665 ל-6,000 בשבוע באוגוסט, ו-7,000 בשבוע בספטמבר. במהלך חודשי חורף 1665 הייתה ירידה במספר המתים ובפברואר 1666 פחת מספר המתים והמלך וחצר המלוכה שבו אל העיר.

המגפה המשיכה לפקוד את העיר בצורה מתונה עד ספטמבר 1666, כאשר ב-2 בספטמבר 1666 החלה השרפה הגדולה של לונדון אשר הרסה את הסיטי, ובמקביל הביסה את המגפה.

השפעת המגפה

המגפה של לונדון השפיעה בעיקר על העניים, כיוון שהעשירים יכלו להרשות לעצמם לעזוב את העיר לטובת האחוזות הכפריות שלהם, או לעבור לגור עם בני משפחה באזורים אחרים של אנגליה. השרפה הגדולה של לונדון, שהביאה לחיסול המגפה הגדולה, פגעה קשות בסוחרים ובבעלי הנכסים של העיר[9]. בעקבות השרפה, רוב רובה של לונדון נבנתה מחדש והפרלמנט חוקק את חוק הבניה מחדש של לונדון של 1666.[10] תוכנית הרחובות של הבירה נותרה יחסית ללא שינוי, אולם נעשו שיפורים מסוימים: הרחובות הורחבו, משטחים רוצפו, פתחי ביוב פתוחים נאטמו ונאסר על בניית בנינים מעץ. השימוש בלבנים או אבנים הפך לחובה ובנינים רבים נבנו. הבירה זכתה לא רק למתיחת פנים, אלא גם הפכה לסביבה בריאה יותר לחיות בה. תחושת הקהילה בעיר גדלה, לאחר שהתושבים שרדו את נוראות 1665-1666.[9]

הבניה מחדש ארכה מעל 10 שנים ורוברט הוק פיקח עליה בתפקידו כמודד של לונדון. האדריכל סר כריסטופר רן היה מעורב בבניה מחדש של קתדרלת סנט פול ומעל ל-50 כנסיות נוספות. המלך צ'ארלס השני פעל רבות לקדם את עבודת הבניה מחדש. הוא היה פטרון של האומנויות והמדע וייסד את מצפה הכוכבים המלכותי והחברה המלכותית, קבוצה מדעית אשר חבריה הראשונים כללו את רוברט הוק, רוברט בויל וסר אייזיק ניוטון. למעשה, מתוך האש והקטל החלה תקופת הרנסאנס האנגלי בתחום המדעים והאומנות.[9]
