O Imperio de Kanem, ou, despois, Imperio de Bornu, existía en áreas que agora forman parte de Nixeria, Níxer, Camerún, Libia e Chad. Foi coñecido polos xeógrafos árabes como o Imperio Kanem desde o século VIII e durou como o reino independente de Bornu (o Imperio Bornu ) ata 1900.[1]

O Imperio Kanem (c. 700–1380) situouse nos países actuais de Chad, Nixeria e Libia.[2] No seu apoxeo, abranguía non só a maior parte do Chad senón tamén partes do sur de Libia ( Fezán ) e o leste de Níxer, o nordeste de Nixeria e o norte de Camerún. O Imperio Bornu (década de 1380–1893) foi un estado no que hoxe é o nordeste de Nixeria, que co tempo chegou a ser aínda máis grande que Kanem, incorporando áreas que hoxe son partes do Chad, Níxer e Camerún.[3]

A historia temperá do imperio coñécese principalmente pola Crónica Real, ou Girgam, descuberta en 1851 polo viaxeiro alemán Heinrich Barth.
