NGC 858 est une lointaine et très vaste galaxie spirale barrée située dans la constellation de la Baleine. Sa vitesse par rapport au fond diffus cosmologique est de 12 356 ± 38 km/s, ce qui correspond à une distance de Hubble de 179 ± 13 Mpc (∼584 millions d'al)[1]. NGC 858 a été découverte par l'astronome américain Francis Leavenworth en 1886.

La classe de luminosité de NGC 858 est III et elle présente une large raie HI[1].

Avec une brillance de surface égale à 14,09 mag/am2, on peut qualifier NGC 858 de galaxie à faible brillance de surface (LSB en anglais pour low surface brightness). Les galaxies LSB sont des galaxies diffuses (D) avec une brillance de surface inférieure de moins d'une magnitude à celle du ciel nocturne ambiant.

La petite galaxie à l'est de NGC 858 est 2MASXJ02123376-2228092 ou encore NGC 858-2. On ne connait pas la distance qui nous sépare de cette galaxie. Même si on se réfère à cette galaxie comme étant NGC 858-2[2], laissant croire à une paire de galaxies en interaction gravitationnelle, rien n'est certain à ce sujet. Cependant, selon Soares et ses collègues, NGC 858 et ESO 478-014 formeraient une paire de galaxie[4].. La distance de Hubble d'ESO 478-014 est égale à 176,24 ± 12,35 Mpc (∼575 millions d'al)[5]. Il est donc probable que ces deux galaxies forment une paire réelle.
