NGC 5040 est une galaxie lenticulaire (spirale ?) située dans la constellation des Chiens de chasse. Sa vitesse par rapport au fond diffus cosmologique est de 7 693 ± 12 km/s, ce qui correspond à une distance de Hubble de 113,5 ± 7,9 Mpc (∼370 millions d'al)[1]. NGC 5040 a été découverte par l'astronome germano-britannique William Herschel en 1789.

À ce jour, une mesure non basée sur le décalage vers le rouge (redshift) donne une distance d'environ 105,000 Mpc (∼342 millions d'al)[5]. Cette valeur est tout juste à l'extérieur des valeurs de la distance de Hubble. Notons cependant que c'est avec la valeur moyenne des mesures indépendantes, lorsqu'elles existent, que la base de données NASA/IPAC calcule le diamètre d'une galaxie et qu'en conséquence le diamètre de NGC 5040 pourrait être d'environ 46,7 kpc (∼152 000 al) si on utilisait la distance de Hubble pour le calculer.

La galaxie à environ 1 minute d'arc au nord-ouest de NGC 5040 est PGC 3087263 quelquefois mentionnée comme une compagne de NGC 5040[4]. Avec une distance de Hubble de 251 ± 18 Mpc (∼819 millions d'al)[6], cette galaxie est au moins deux fois plus éloignée. Il s'agit donc d'un coupe purement optique.
