Frederick Jay ”Rick” Rubin (s. 10. maaliskuuta 1963 Long Island, New York^[1]) on yhdysvaltalainen musiikkituottaja. Rubin on työskennellyt monipuolisesti niin rock-, pop-, rap-, country- kuin heavy metal -artistienkin kanssa. Näiden joukkoon kuuluvat esimerkiksi Metallica, Linkin Park, Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, LL Cool J, Slipknot, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, Johnny Cash , The Smashing Pumpkins ja Eminem.

Rolling Stone -lehti on kutsunut Rubinia maailman menestyneimmäksi musiikkituottajaksi kaikki genret huomioon ottaen. Music Television kutsui häntä vuonna 2005 viimeisten 20 vuoden ajan tärkeimmäksi tuottajaksi.^[2]

Varhainen elämä

Rick Rubin syntyi 1963 New Yorkin Long Islandilla juutalaisen^[3] perheensä ainoaksi lapseksi. Hän on yhdeksänvuotiaasta asti ollut hyvin kiinnostunut taikuudesta. Kouluikäisenä Rubin soitti soolokitaraa The Pricks -nimisessä punkyhtyeessä. Hän ihaili 1970-luvulla erityisesti australialaista AC/DC:tä, jota hän pitää yhä kaikkien aikojen rock'n'roll-yhtyeenä. Vuonna 1980 Rubiniin teki suuren vaikutuksen soul-legenda James Brown, jonka konsertissa hän kävi. Rubin on kertonut halunneensa sen jälkeen tuoda samanlaisen tunteen ja grooven tuottamilleen levyille.^[4]

Rubin aloitti 1981 opinnot New Yorkin yliopistossa tavoitteenaan lakiura.^[5] Hän opiskeli päivisin ja kävi musiikkiklubeilla iltaisin. Hän alkoi kiinnostua punkin lisäksi myös silloin melko tuntemattomasta hip hop -musiikista ja toimi tiskijukkana opiskelija-asuntolassa. Hän soitti yliopistoaikanaan rock-yhtyeessä nimeltä Hose.^[6]

Ura

Rubin aloitti tuottajanuransa hip hopin parissa. Hän perusti Def Jam Recordings -levy-yhtiön Russell Simmonsin kanssa 1984 ja tuotti LL Cool J:n albumin Radio (1985) ja Beastie Boys -albumin Licensed to Ill (1986). Jälkimmäinen oli ensimmäinen rap-albumi, joka nousi listaykköseksi, ja samalla hip hopista tuli kaupallisesti merkittävä tyylilaji.^[2]

Rubin lähti Def Jamista ja perusti oman levy-yhtiönsä Def American. Hän siirtyi samalla rapista metallimusiikkiin ja tuotti vuodesta 1986 alkaen muun muassa Danzigin ja Slayerin albumeita. Rubinin tuottama Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) toi Red Hot Chili Peppersille ensi kertaa mainstream-menestystä ollen samalla uskollinen yhtyeen juurille. Rubinin yhteistyö Johnny Cashin kanssa 1990-luvulla ja 2000-luvulla nosti Cashin jälleen suosioon ja toi Rubinille menestystä, minkä seurauksena hän saattoi alkaa valikoida artistinsa entistä tarkemmin. Rubinin tuottamat artistit ovat edustaneet hyvin monipuolisesti eri tyylilajeja.^[2]

Rubin toimi Columbia Recordsin yhtenä johtajana 2007–2012.^[7]
