Lothar von Trotha vuonna 1904.

Adrian Dietrich Lothar von Trotha (3. heinäkuuta 1848 Magdeburg – 31. maaliskuuta 1920 Bonn)[1] oli saksalainen kenraali, joka toimi vuosina 1904–1905 Saksan Lounais-Afrikan (nykyisen Namibian) kuvernöörinä. Hererojen ja namojen kansanmurha suoritettiin hänen määräyksestään.

Ura

Trotha syntyi aatelisen upseerin perheeseen.[2] Hän aloitti sotilasuransa Preussin armeijassa vuonna 1865 ja osallistui nuorena upseerina Preussin–Itävallan sotaan sekä Saksan–Ranskan sotaan, jonka aikana hän sai 2. luokan rautaristin. Trotha oli vuosina 1894–1897 Saksan Itä-Afrikkaan (nyk. Tansania) sijoitettujen joukkojen (schutztruppe) komentajana ja samalla Saksan Itä-Afrikan kuvernöörin sijaisena.[1] Hänellä oli keskeinen rooli vuoden 1896 hehejen kapinan kukistamisessa, jossa julmuuksia ei kaihdettu.[2][3] Trotha osallistui vuonna 1900 jalkaväkiprikaatin komentajana Kiinan boksarikapinan kukistamiseen. Hänet ylennettiin 1866 luutnantiksi, 1873 yliluutnantiksi, 1877 kapteeniksi, 1888 majuriksi, 1894 everstiluutnantiksi, 1899 kenraalimajuriksi ja 1903 kenraaliluutnantiksi.[1]

Saksan Lounais-Afrikassa puhkesi vuoden 1904 alussa hererojen kapina, jota paikallinen kuvernööri Theodor Leutwein ei kyennyt kukistamaan.[4] Trotha nimitettiin 3. toukokuuta 1904 Leutweinin tilalle Saksan Lounais-Afrikan siirtoarmeijan ylipäälliköksi.[1] Trothan saapuessa maahan 11. kesäkuuta Samuel Mahareron johtamat hererot olivat vetäytyneet syrjäseudulle.[4] Trothasta tuli 28. heinäkuuta myös Saksan Lounais-Afrikan kuvernööri.[3] Alivoimastaan huolimatta hän löi hererot Waterbergin taistelussa 11. elokuuta. Kiinni saatuja hereroita teloitettiin joukoittain, joten koko hererokansa pakeni saksalaisten kostoa Omaheken (Kalaharin) autiomaahan. Trotha antoi 2. lokakuuta 1904 Ozombu Zovindimbassa niin sanotun tuhoamiskäskyn (vernichtungsbefehl), jonka mukaan jokainen herero tuli surmata, mukaan lukien naiset ja lapset. Autiomaa saarrettiin sotilasvartioilla, jotta hererot eivät voisi poistua sieltä.[4][3] Lisäksi vesilähteitä myrkytettiin. Pääosa autiomaassa olleista hereroista nääntyi kuoliaaksi.[2] Keisari Vilhelm II kumosi tuhoamiskäskyn valtakunnankansleri Bernhard von Bülowin vaatimuksesta tammikuussa 1905, minkä jälkeen hereroja alettiin vuorostaan vangita julmille keskitysleireille.[4][3]

Trotha kukisti samaan aikaan myös lokakuussa 1904 puhjenneen namojen kapinan. Myös namoja suljettiin keskitysleireille, erityisesti Lüderitzin lähelle perustetulle Shark Islandin leirille.[4] Trotha kutsuttiin takaisin Saksaan marraskuussa 1905 ja hän vetäytyi palveluksesta seuraavana vuonna.[3] Hän sai vielä ylennyksen jalkaväenkenraaliksi.[5] Konflikti ja keskitysleirien käyttö jatkuivat Saksan Lounais-Afrikassa vuoteen 1907. Hereroista kuoli vuosina 1904–1907 noin 75 prosenttia ja namoista 50 prosenttia, mitä on pidetty yhtenä nykyajan tuhoisimmista kansanmurhista.[4]
