WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! DYK for Adam Bobrow

On 5 May 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Adam Bobrow, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that table tennis commentator Adam Bobrow's nickname "Snakeman" comes from a trick shot called "the snake"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Adam Bobrow. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Adam Bobrow), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

M.CC.I. redirect

Hi, please can you show me where the evidence is for this term being an abbreviation, as I can't see it? The official abbreviation seems to be MCCJ, if the infobox is anything to go by (and MCCJ is already a DAB with this listed). It's also formatted in a peculiar way which makes it less credible as a redirect. Bungle (talkcontribs) 16:13, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bungle From the first line of Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus: "(Latin: Missionarii Comboniani Cordis Iesu)" - that would be abbreviated MCCI. I agree that the formatting (location of dots) is a little odd. However, it is abbreviated like that in our article on Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:20, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with your view on declining the csd on this, to be honest, but even more that it should remain as-is. The organisation does not seem to be typically known by the abbreviation MCCI. Furthermore, and on the same point, we already have a DAB at MCCI (which includes the target article, I assume on the basis of your response), so why should this redirect, which is bizarrely formatted, point to an organisation where the only link seems to be a Latin initialism, instead of the existing DAB? If it were M.C.C.I. then it would not be unreasonable to point this to MCCI instead, as at least in that format it would be useable, but this to me does fall under the "implausible typo or misnomer" criteria. Bungle (talkcontribs) 17:36, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy deletion is only supposed to be used in the most obvious cases. If it is less than obvious, a deletion discussion is the proper forum. In this case redirects for discussion. I suggest you nominate it there. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:40, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Beauty Myth: Revisited

Whoops, looks like we both hit that one at the same time. Sorry about that.

BTW, I saw your initial take was to move it to User:Desiraewiki/The Beauty Myth (i.e., w/o the "Revisited" part of the title). Note that The Beauty Myth and The Beauty Myth: Revisited are two different works. TJRC (talk) 20:17, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I moved it there as that was the original location, in the user's userspace. I was putting it back where they had moved it from. Also, is The Beauty Myth: Revisited a separate work? I'm not finding any indication of it other than a talk Naomi Wolf gave on the 20th anniversary of the publication of The Beauty Myth. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:22, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You know what? Looking more closely, I don't think it really amounts to a new work; If I'm reading it correctly (now) it's seems to be just a republication of the old one with a new introduction. If that's the case, a separate article really wouldn't be warranted at all; a (small) section in the existing article would be sufficient. TJRC (talk) 21:27, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, ONUnicorn. I see that you have restored and userfied the deleted article The Beauty Myth: Revisited, which I had deleted. I happened to discover that by accident, and if I had not done so I would not have been aware that you had done so, as you did not inform me. Neither, as far as I can see from your editing history, did you inform UtherSRG, who had subsequently re-deleted the same article after it was re-created. You may have had excellent reasons for restoring the page, but, as I expect an administrator of several years' standing such as yourself to know, Wikipedia:Administrators#Misuse of administrative tools recommends first undertaking "a brief discussion with the administrator whose action is challenged" before reverting another administrator's action, if there is any chance of disagreement. There is, of course, room for differing opinions as to when reverting another administrator's action is so obvious as to justify doing so without consultation, but when you are overturning the actions of not just one administrator but two, there is ipso facto evidence that your decision is likely to be to some extent controversial, and that consensus may not be in favour of your decision, so I would think that quite exceptionally good reasons would be required for a single administrator to unilaterally overturn the agreed actions of two administrators without consultation. However, even if you feel you have excellent reasons for regarding this as a case where it was justified to overturn an administrative action without consulting the administrators concerned, I am very surprised that you did not at least do the courtesy of informing us of your decision to unilaterally overturn our decisions after having done so. Perhaps you would like to comment. JBW (talk) 14:28, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JBW I apologize, I probably should have consulted you. I will note that I was the one who placed the speedy tag you were responding you when you deleted it to begin with. When I placed the tag instead of deleting it myself, I was considering that, given my earlier actions on the article (of moving it back to userspace) and conversations with the user, it was better to tag it and allow someone else to take the action of deleting it. When the user engaged and asked for it restored to userspace, I did not even think about the fact that I was not the one who deleted it. I do apologize for not extending you the courtesy of at least notifying if not consulting you. I just didn't think about the fact that I was not the deleting admin. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:21, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks very much for the explanation, which makes what you did much more comprehensible. JBW (talk) 19:23, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello ONUnicorn,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

The Core Contest winners announced

The winners of the 2023 The Core Contest are announced 🎉. We had an amazing set of improvements this year, and the judges (Femke, Aza24 and Casliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.

  • First place goes to Buidhe for improving The Holocaust; very core, highly relevant; their work on bringing geographical balance to the article puts the topic in a whole different light. We also commend improvements to sourcing and prose
  • A close second place goes to Phlsph7 for improving Education from an unstructured jumble into a well-sourced piece of instruction
  • Third prize goes to Johnbod for improving Donatello, a near five-fold expansion with great sourcing and fantastic imagery
  • A tie for fourth place goes to Thebiguglyalien for improving Crime, for a strong improvement in sourcing
  • A tie for fifth place goes to Sammielh for International law, improved by converting contextless listicles into a proper sourced prose

If you wish to start or stop receiving news about The Core Contest, please add or remove yourself from the delivery list. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 20:07, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. Please help adding the Chiragh Baloch article

Hello dear ONUnicorn!

Chiragh Baloch is one of famous baloch actors who worked in this area for a long time. I wanted to add an article in name of Chiragh Baloch, but it semes, it protected from creation. If passible please create this article using this information, thanks in advance. Ibrahim khashrowdi (talk) 17:46, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Ibrahim khashrowdi, thanks for reaching out about that draft.
When you are dealing with a title that has been salted, as that one has, it's a really good idea to go through the artiles for creation process. I've looked over the draft you've created, and I notice it only cites two sources, one of which (the surkhiyn one) gives me an error message ("This site can’t be reached"). The other one (from the Daily Times) looks like a good source, but before the article is accepted, it needs to demonstrate he is notable by reference to multiple reliable sources (such as the Daily Times one seems to be) that are not affiliated with him.
At this point I recommend finding 2-3 more sources and adding information from them to the article and citing them before clicking the button that says "Submit the draft for review!" at the bottom of the box I've added to the draft. If an AFC reviewer accepts the draft, I or any other admin will be happy to unprotect the title so it can be moved to article space. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:40, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello ONUnicorn,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:28, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

U5 decline

Hi ONUnicorn, I noticed you declined my U5 of User:Lison pema with the summary "Decline U5. Userspace drafts are allowed." Would you mind taking another look? From my experience in anti-spam this userpage is obviously an LLM generated promo-piece. Phrases like:

  • "prominent political figure"
  • "he made significant contributions to the development of the region and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of its residents"
  • "Linggi's dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of his community have left a lasting impact"
  • "His legacy continues to inspire future generations of leaders and serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and determination in achieving meaningful change"
  • "His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on the region, and his legacy will be remembered for years to come"

make this a clear violation of WP:UP#PROMO, which in my opinion makes it exempt from the "plausible drafts and pages" part of U5 since it's violating WP:UPYES. On top of all this, it is violating WP:PROMO, which I think makes it eligible for G11 anyway. I hope you will reconsider given my reasoning. All the best! Schminnte [talk to me] 18:33, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

They have also copy-pasted the promotional page onto their talk, which is further evidence of promotional editing. Schminnte [talk to me] 18:38, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. If your concern is that it is promotional, than it should have been tagged as G11, not U5. I will take another look with G11 in mind. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:49, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Schminnte I see they also copy-pasted it into their sandbox. It seems to me like a new user confused as to where it should go. Reading through it, it reads like an obituary, although it does not exactly state that the subject is deceased and I cannot find much information about the subject (a mention in an article from 10 years ago about "Former MLA and HGB of Injonu Sakole Linggi" speaking about the deterioration of water pipelines and flood damage is about all I could come up with, but I bet there are offline sources since he seems to have been MLA in the 1970s). At any rate, it doesn't strike me as promotional enough for G11, especially if the subject is deceased. I have redirected their userpage to their sandbox in the effort to keep the content confined, and left them a message about the appropriateness or lack thereof of having that content in each space they have put it, or at all. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:27, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that opinion. While I may disagree with the promotional nature and the threshold of G11, I really appreciate and respect your opinion and advice. Thank you for dealing with the situation so sensitively. Have a nice day, Schminnte [talk to me] 19:37, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am interested in NPP school

Hello ONUnicorn, I saw on the NPP school page that you have one slot available for training. I would like to learn how to become a reviewer, but I would like somebody to show me the ropes before I attempt to request permissions. I have light experience in AfC and AfD but nothing impressive. If you are available, I would like to start training in the new year. Thank you! ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 00:34, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IPBE grant

I was a bit concerned about the IPBE grant at the user talk page. From WP:IPEC it says that it normally should be confirmed through checkuser or auto block. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 14:32, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@0xDeadbeef - Oops; you're right, I probably should have checked with a checkuser first. I did see that is an active block on a fairly large IP range logged at Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Best known for IP, and it certainly seemed plausible that that block could be affecting the user in question. Next time I see someone using a {{admin help}} to request that I'll refer them to WP:UTRS. Having already done the wrong thing, what would you suggest I do at this point? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 06:18, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the fast response! Maybe an email to the checkuser mailing list? 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 06:30, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello ONUnicorn,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

WikiCup 2024 August newsletter

The fourth round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 29 August. Each of the 8 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 472 points, and the following contestants scored more than 700 points:

Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated. Contestants put in extraordinary amounts of effort during this round, and their scores can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 36 featured articles, 55 featured lists, 15 good articles, 93 in the news credits, and at least 333 did you know credits. They have conducted 357 featured content reviews, as well as 553 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 30 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed during Round 5, which starts on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. If two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please see this page. Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
