This has to be the most obfuscating sentence on this page. What "problems concerning the need for modernist painting to reject the illusionistic practices of the past" are being referred to here? This sentence is so poorly structured that it is difficult to follow with just one reading, which is just bad writing. Maybe a few sentences discussing why there is a "need for modernist painting to reject the illusionistic practices of the past" could be added? For example:
