Η Βέστα (λατινικά: Vesta) της ρωμαϊκής μυθολογίας είναι η παρθένος θεότητα της οικογένειας και της οικιακής εστίας, αντίστοιχη της Εστίας στην ελληνική μυθολογία. Ο χαρακτήρας της δεν εμφανίζεται σχεδόν σε κανένα μύθο και δεν απεικονίζεται παρά μόνο σαν η ιερή εστία του σπιτιού. Η Βέστα είναι κόρη του Σατούρνους και της Οπς, αδερφή του Γιούπιτερ, του Πλούτωνα, της Γιούνο και της Κέρες. Η Βέστα προστάτευε την οικογενειακή αρμονία και την τάξη των πραγμάτων.

Κάθε πόλη είχε μια δημόσια εστία που ήταν αφιερωμένη στη Βέστα. Όταν ιδρυόταν μια νέα αποικία, οι άποικοι κουβαλούσαν μαζί τους την εστία της μητρόπολης, από την οποία θα δημιουργούσαν τη δημόσια εστία της νέας πόλης.

Τη δημόσια εστία της πόλης φρουρούσαν οι ιέρειες της Βέστας, οι Βεστάλες. Κάθε πρώτη του Μάρτη, η εστία της πόλης ανανεωνόταν και συνέχιζε να καίει μέχρι το 391, όταν ο Αυτοκράτορας Θεοδόσιος Α' απαγόρεψε τη δημόσια «ειδωλολατρία». Μια από τις Βεστάλες ήταν κι η Ρέα Συλβία, η οποία γέννησε από το Μαρς τους δίδυμους Ρωμύλο και Ρώμο.

Βεστάλια

Γιορτή αφιερωμένη στη θεά Βέστα αποτελούσαν τα Βεστάλια, που πραγματοποιούνταν από τις 7 μέχρι τις 15 Ιουνίου. Την πρώτη μέρα, άνοιγε το ιερό του ναού της Βέστας για μια και μοναδική φορά κατά τη διάρκεια του χρόνου κι οι γυναίκες πρόσφεραν θυσίες.
