Με τον γενικό όρο απόλυτη χρονολόγηση εννοείται στην αρχαιολογία μια σειρά τεχνικών που μας βοηθούν να εκτιμήσουμε την ηλικία των τέχνεργων, των υλικών, ή των αρχαιολογικών τόπων σε πραγματικά ημερολογιακά έτη. Η διαδικασία γίνεται είτε άμεσα ή μέσω διαδικασίας ισοζύγισης (βαθμονόμησης) με υλικά γνωστής ηλικίας. Τέτοιες τεχνικές στηρίζονται σε αρχές ανεξάρτητες από τις επιδράσεις των κατασκευαστών ή των χρηστών ενός αντικειμένου. Βλ. για παράδειγμα ραδιοχρονολόγηση. Χρησιμοποιούνται διάφορα ημερολόγια για την καταγραφή της απόλυτης χρονολόγησης. Ορισμένες επιστήμες προτιμούν το Π.Π. (προ παρόντος) και το παρόν επιστημονικά ορίζεται ως το 1950. Όσον αφορά στην αρχαιολογία, τόσο στην Ευρώπη όσο και στις Η.Π.Α. χρησιμοποιούνται ως δείκτες χρονολόγησης το π.Χ. και το Π.Κ.Ε., που στηρίζονται στο Γρηγοριανό ημερολόγιο, αν και μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν και άλλα ημερολόγια για ιδιαίτερους πολιτισμούς σε άλλες περιοχές του κόσμου.
