Roedd Emyr Currie-Jones CBE (17 Ionawr 1917 – 13 Hydref 2008) yn gyfreithiwr a gwleidydd lleol y Blaid Lafur yng Nghaerdydd. Roedd yn Gadeirydd Cyngor Sir De Morgannwg ac yn adnabyddus am ei rôl yn cyflwyno addysg Gymraeg yng Nghaerdydd. Fe’i disgrifiwyd fel “enghraifft ragorol o gynghorydd lleol a lywiodd addysg gyfrwng Cymru trwy lawer o storm wleidyddol.”[1]

Cefndir

Ganwyd Currie-Jones ar 17 Ionawr 1917 yng Nghaernarfon, i Grace Currie a Lewis Jones.[2] Roedd yn siaradwr Cymraeg rhugl ac aeth i Ysgol Sir Gaernarfon cyn graddio o Goleg Prifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth, [2] lle rhannodd lety gyda D. Myrddin Lloyd,[3] a'r awdur adnabyddus, Emyr Humphreys.[2].[4] Yn dilyn hynny daeth Currie-Jones yn gyfreithiwr yng Nghaerdydd. Priododd â Mary Catherine Jones.[2]

Gyrfa gyfreithiol

Daeth Currie-Jones yn gyfreithiwr yng Nghaerdydd ac roedd yn erlyn cyfreithiwr i Gyngor Dinas Caerdydd rhwng 1950 a 1955.[5] Daeth yn bartner yn y cwmni cyfreithiol, Rees, Currie-Jones, Davies ac Evans, a leolir yn Arcêd y Castell ac roedd hefyd yn llywydd Cymdeithas Cyfraith Caerdydd a'r Cylch. Ymddeolodd o'r arfer cyfreithiol ym 1987.[5]

Gwleidyddiaeth a gwasanaeth cyhoeddus

Etholwyd Currie-Jones yn gynghorydd Llafur ar Gyngor Dinas Caerdydd ym 1966,[1] gan ddod yn Gadeirydd y Pwyllgor Addysg, gan golli ei sedd cyngor wedi hynny ond cael ei ailethol ym 1971 ar gyfer ward Cathays.[6] Ar ôl creu De Morgannwg, daeth Currie-Jones yn Gadeirydd cyntaf Cyngor Sir De Morgannwg, rhwng 1973 a 1975.[7] Cynrychiolodd ward Cathays rhwng 1973 a 1977, gan golli ei sedd yn etholiad 1977.[8] Cafodd ei ailethol i Gyngor wardiau "Trelái ac Ely" rhwng 1981 a 1989.[5]

Fel Cadeirydd y Pwyllgor Addysg ar Gyngor Dinas Caerdydd llwyddodd i osod y sylfaen ar gyfer ysgol Gymraeg gyntaf Caerdydd, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. Yn erbyn gwrthwynebiad cryf i'r syniad, perswadiodd Undeb Cenedlaethol yr Athrawon (NUT) a llefarydd y Ceidwadwyr ar y Gymraeg, i'w gefnogi.[1]

Dyfarnwyd CBE iddo yn Anrhydeddau Blwyddyn Newydd 1976 am wasanaethau cymdeithasol a llywodraeth leol yn Ne Cymru.

Roedd yn Gristion o ran ffydd ac yn ddiacon ac ysgrifennydd yng Nghapel Minny Street, Caerdydd. Roedd hefyd yn heddychwr gydol ei oes.[9]

Roedd Currie-Jones hefyd yn aelod o Gyd-bwyllgor Addysg Cymru, Cyngor Coleg Prifysgol Caerdydd a Chyngor yr Iaith Gymraeg.[5] Roedd yn gaderydd pwyllgor gwaith Eisteddfod Caerdydd 1978 [10] ac roedd yn Llywydd anrhydeddus Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru pan ddaeth i Gaerdydd yn 2008, hefyd yn Gadeirydd y pwyllgor trefnu.[11]

Roedd yn aeod o lys Llywodraethwyr Prifysgol Abertawe, Cyngor Ysgol Feddygaeth Genedlaethol Cymru, Llys Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru a Chyngor Llyfrau Cymru.[10]

Gwaith gwirfoddol

Bu'n gwasanaethu'n wirfoddol yn y Dwyrain Canol a'r Eidal gyda mudiad Cronfa Achub y Plant a'r UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration).[2] Roedd yn gefnogwr o Urdd Gobaith Cymru a chyfrannodd £3,000 yn ei cymunrodd i'r mudiad.[12]

Bu farw Currie-Jones ar 13 Hydref 2008, yn 91 oed.[5]
