Timopoetin je protein uključen u indukciju CD90 u timusu. Gen timopoetina (TMPO) kodira tri alternativno prerađene iRNK koje kodiraju proteine od 75 kDa (alfa), 51 kDa (beta) i 39 kDa (gama) koji se sveprisutno ispoljavaju u svim ćelijama. Ljudski gen TMPO nalazi se na hromosomskoj poziciji 12q22 i sastoji se od osam egzona.
GenTMPO, kod ljudi kodira polipeptid 2 povezan sa laminom (LAP2), izoforme beta/ gama.[5][6] LAP2 je protein unutrašnje jedarne membrane (IN).[7]
TMPO alfa prisutan je difuzno eksprimiran u ćelijskoom jedru, dok su TMPO beta i gama lokalizirani u jedarnoj membrani. TMPO beta je ljudski homolog mišjeg proteina LAP2. LAP2 igra ulogu u regulaciji jedarne arhitekture vezanjem lamina B1 i hromosome. Ova interakcija je regulirana fosforilacijom tokom mitoze. S obzirom na jedarnu lokalizaciju tri izoforme TMPO, malo je vjerojatno da ovi proteini imaju bilo kakvu ulogu u indukciji CD90.
U timusu nastaje nekoliko tvari s hormonskim djelovanjem, od kojih su poznatiji timozini i timopoetin, ali njihova funkcija još nije posve razjašnjena.Misli se da te tvari vjerojatno reguliraju mnogobrojne fiziološke procese, kao što su diferencijacija timocita, regulacija funkcije limfocita u perifernim limfnim organima, djelovanje na nervni i endokrini sistem, obnavljanje oštećenih krvnih sudova.
