Thanks Andy Dingley. I'll keep an eye on it. At this point I'm leaning toward abstention as my involvement in this article might cloud my ability to neutrally assess the AfD. Just as with the earlier 3O, I'm content to let the community make this decision. I may weigh in if things seem to be especially off the mark, but you also may recall that my original position was that adopting CSC #1 rather than CSC #3 (?) would improve the long-term viability of the list. To date the only part that is well-sourced is the lede that I created in 2012. Articles that eschew reliable sources are inherently unreliable even if listing bluelinks and a local consensus of 3 cannot override a community decision (or the guidelines). For now I'm just an observer.
I know you have a particular fondness for the steampunk badgers (Archie LeBrock, Captain Ramshackle, etc.) so if I were you I would try to locate some reasonable sources that provide significant coverage and that addresses the characters directly and in detail. Even if the AfD concludes in a "keep" or "no consensus" result, it could do no harm to properly source the entries that you care about. If "delete" is the result then the good RSes should be migrated to the articles on the characters (or their respective titles). And in case you're curious, yes, I have backed up the lede just in case. :) -Thibbs (talk) 15:04, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2020-02-17T15:04:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Thibbs-2020-02-17T15:04:00.000Z-Andy_Dingley-2020-02-15T23:57:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Hi Vchimpanzee. Thanks for following up on this. I came up with a workaround, but I would still be interested to find out if there was a superior solution because the workaround is really pretty messy. I'll see if I can start a thread at VPT if I find some time. Lack of notability, minimal sources, largely reliant on game database entries - ABC Online just quotes MobyGames on the subject. I searched for additional sources through archive.org, found nothing.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Not the most accurate description I've seen... The infobox does include links to game databases, but the article itself is clearly not based on them. And of course the fact that ABC quotes MobyGames is immaterial considering that no part of the MobyGames quote appears in the Wikipedia article. Better to go through AfD if you insist. -Thibbs (talk) 14:28, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2020-12-15T14:28:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Thibbs-2020-12-15T14:28:00.000Z-Waxworker-2020-12-14T10:46:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Thanks for reaching out, Tyrone Madera. It looks like you've expanded the article since I tagged it for WP:VG. I can see that you have made substantial efforts to develop proper coverage for the topic and it seems at first blush to be a notable topic. Your writing style looks good to me and the article seems to be rather comprehensive. As far as the sources are concerned, I think you might benefit from checking out the specific vetted sources listed at WP:VG/RS (especially at the bottom where specific sources are discussed). The ones that stuck out for me the most were the YouTube and Steam store links. Wikipedia tends to frown on YouTube as non-reliable in most cases and the store links (especially if directly linked in the prose) are often regarded as spam. If you are looking for replacement sources, you might try either the WP:VG Search Engines here and/or the WP:VG Reference Library here. Let me know if you need any help. -Thibbs (talk) 03:57, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-02-14T03:57:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Thibbs-2021-02-14T03:57:00.000Z-Tyrone_Madera-2021-02-14T00:49:00.000Z","replies":["c-Tyrone_Madera-2021-02-14T21:15:00.000Z-Thibbs-2021-02-14T03:57:00.000Z"]}}-->
Thank you, Thibbs! I'm glad that you liked the writing style and comprehensiveness, among other things. For the last four games that are listed, I'm thinking about trimming it down because the games are more hard to get ahold of, given that they were created around the time of the inception of the studio.
I actually have a question related to that: is a YouTube playthrough sufficient to prove the existence of a game, if nothing else? The fact that the last four games exist and their premises, on reading their article sections again, are probably all that must be said about them. Wikipedia seems mute on this topic. Would citing the game itself be better than citing a playthrough in this case, even though it's less accessible?
Secondly, should I go ahead and eliminate all of the Steam store citations, or should some be kept such as in parts of the text where I get information like date of release and Steam reviews? Also, you make a good point—I'm removing the in-text links as we speak. Lastly, I'm unsure if primary sources are reliable for things like game development, which is typically only covered by the developer rather than reviewers. Is a dev diary a worthwhile citation when speaking on the development of games?
Thank you very much for your help and feedback! I will definitely look into the WP:VG Search Engines and the WP:VG reference library—I had no idea that we had those! I'll try to get back to you when I've made updates accordingly (only if you don't mind, of course ).Tyrone Madera (talk) 21:15, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-02-14T21:15:00.000Z","author":"Tyrone Madera","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Tyrone_Madera-2021-02-14T21:15:00.000Z-Thibbs-2021-02-14T03:57:00.000Z","replies":["c-Thibbs-2021-02-15T20:15:00.000Z-Tyrone_Madera-2021-02-14T21:15:00.000Z"]}}-->
Would citing the game itself be better than citing a playthrough in this case, even though it's less accessible?. - Yes I would cite the game itself.
should some be kept such as in parts of the text where I get information like date of release and Steam reviews?. - They can be kept, but they run the risk of being removed. An info-only section would be preferable to the store as that may give the impression of sales. Ultimately WP:SWYGT is the guideline that touches this question most directly.
Is a dev diary a worthwhile citation - I think that would be better than nothing, but analysis by Wikipedia editors (like you or me) miay stray into the realm of WP:OR. A third-party source analyzing the dev diary would be the best if possible. Failing that, I guess WP:SWYGT would be the main issue.

Thanks for responding so fast. I'll be sure to implement all of that into the page. I don't know what you meant by an info-only section under the second bullet point, however. Is it a type of source or Wikipedia widget? Also, I checked out WP:VG/RS and found that Game World Navigator was on the inconclusive list. Do you know if we could get it verified one way or the other? The archived talk section by Hellknowz and the fact that it is a printed magazine seems promising. By "info-only" I really mean a technical specs page on a product that doesn't also include a pricetag and a button to send it to your shopping cart. Generally I'd avoid include links to stores unless there is no other option and I'd be prepared for pushback.
Verification of an RS would have to come from consensus arising from a discussion at WT:VGRS.

Got it. Yeah, I've been replacing those. What's the best way to propose something for consensus on a talk page? Is there a preferred format or layout? How much detail should I provide? I haven't been as active at WT:VGRS as I used to be so things may have changed, but generally you start a thread and request opinions. Evaluations generally center on concepts like editorial policy, reputation for fact checking and accuracy, staff background, etc. Generally it's more of a request for community input rather than trying to prove a source as reliable. But there's no real formula. It's just a discussion leading to consensus. -Thibbs (talk) 03:32, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-02-16T03:32:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":8,"id":"c-Thibbs-2021-02-16T03:32:00.000Z-Tyrone_Madera-2021-02-16T02:50:00.000Z","replies":["c-Tyrone_Madera-2021-02-17T19:18:00.000Z-Thibbs-2021-02-16T03:32:00.000Z"]}}-->
Thanks Thibbs! I've changed out a lot of sourcing in the article. Hello Thibbs! I hope Vapours has been treating you well recently. I came up with a pretty, probably nifty idea for the upcoming feature in the newsletter. Instead of it being an essay about my opinions, I think a better idea would be to ask a bunch of users in our Wikiproject what their individual thoughts were on the matter, and put it together kind of like a survey, highlighting unique and common answers among everyone. Do you think that's a good concept that we could use? I'll handle sending out the queries and putting it together if so. The vapours... Yeah so far so good. Thanks for asking. :) I do like the idea you've got there for a survey. I think it was attempted in the newsletter ages ago, but it was just posted and nobody really responded to the open call. So you may have to track people down to get answers. I'll see if I can find a link to the survey I was thinking about. -Thibbs (talk) 03:45, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-02-16T03:45:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Thibbs-2021-02-16T03:45:00.000Z-Panini!-2021-02-16T02:46:00.000Z","replies":["c-Thibbs-2021-02-16T03:51:00.000Z-Thibbs-2021-02-16T03:45:00.000Z"]}}-->

Thibbs, Thank you, I left a message to 19 other editors. With that being said, do you have any thoughts on the matter? The question is: How do you determine what makes a video game character notable enough for their own page? Do you follow pre-existing guidelines or have your own opinions on the matter?Panini🥪13:02, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-02-16T13:02:00.000Z","author":"Panini!","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-Panini!-2021-02-16T13:02:00.000Z-Thibbs-2021-02-16T03:51:00.000Z","replies":["c-Thibbs-2021-02-17T17:11:00.000Z-Panini!-2021-02-16T13:02:00.000Z"],"displayName":"anini"}}-->
In my view, the basic answer is found in WP:GNG. There must be multiple reliable sources that cover the topic directly and in depth. Arguments can be made about how many RSes are required and how substantial the coverage must be, but it's ultimately a judgment call. Following the rules pedantically, the absolute minimum would be 2 sources because the plural word "sources" is used and the substantiality is described as "more than a trivial mention". But the barest minimum is not the sort of thing that many editors would allow to fly at AfD if it was nominated. Notability, of course, is only one element of the question. If the topics of the character and the game it came from were closely related there could be a danger of creating a content fork. Other issues worth considering are WP:DUE and WP:TOOBIG.
I would try to follow pre-existing guidelines if available, but I do try to keep the comprehensiveness prong of the encyclopedia in mind as well. Ground-breaking characters of racial, national, religious, gender, sexuality, etc. may be worth covering even if not as well-covered as some of the mega-star characters that we are all familiar with. I must give a caveat here that as far as I know I have never edited a video game character article so I am not the most knowledgeable at the table. I consider WP:CHAR to be a rather recent WikiProject so the rules are a bit looser. I was actually quite amazed to see that the project had just reached its 10th year anniversary earlier this month!

I saw that you have a copy of The Doom Hacker's Guide from looking in the reference library. Would you be able to check if it has a section about Doom clones, specifically mentioning the game "Immoral Cumbat"? I'm searching for sources for List of erotic video games, as I'm currently overhauling the whole article, and while looking for sources for an obscure porno Doom clone called "Immoral Cumbat", The Doom Hacker's Guide came up in Google Books. It would be a great help as all I was able to find otherwise was a brief mention of it in a French magazine, which isn't enough to show notability. Thanks. Thank you for looking! Google books doesn't provide any page numbers or a preview unfortunately, it just came up first thing when I searched for the name of the game. If it's not in the index, if it's mentioned at all, it likely isn't covered in depth enough to be useful as a source. I'll just remove the game from the list when I work on it more tonight. Layla Love, an article you created in 2018, is under spirited attack by a new-to-Wikipedia editor who sees this as a personal 'white whale.' I reverted a PROD (twice) and recommended taking it to AfD, which appears to now be that editor's intent. If there are better references than now exist, now is the time. Yes I notices there was a concerted effort by a single editor to remove the topic of Layla Love. I'm not normally an art-related editor, but I had made an effort to come up with a basic article to cover the topic after a friend of mine had become obsessed with the artist. As I told him in 2018, the most critical issue for the survival of the article is the existence of reliable sources. I have come to a decision that the article is sufficient to cover the topic, however as I am potentially an interested person (in as much as I edited the original article) I think it makes most sense to leave it for other editors. I do believe that it would also make sense for the apparent Single-purpose account to work on something unrelated because there is a fair possibility of less acceptable editing. I probably should have noted that I'm currently experiencing significant health issues at the moment and I am still recovering from a procedure of a few weeks ago. I will probably not really do much in relation to the Layla Love article in any reasonable time. Hi Thibbs!
My message has to do with an article about a certain little Japanese video game. You see, I'm digging for info that could help expand the page's development section, but, given the game's origin, some neat tidbits on the topic lie beyond the language barrier, which is kinda stalling as my command of Japanese is near non-existent. Specifically, I've stumbled upon these liner notes for the game's soundtrack which entirely read as cipher text to my eyes, so I wondered whether you would consider lending a helping hand with interpreting the notes, seeing as you've had quite a lot of experience in that field. Looking forward to hearing from you. Electroguv, I gave it a shot here. As I said earlier, the kanji is blurry in some places. Text on pages 1-6 generally work, and 7-10 is generally in English anyway, but there are some very small kanji characters at the bottom of page 6 (seems to be a short bio for Kow Otani) and at the bottom of page 9 where I can really only discern the katakana/hiragana. Either way, here's what I came up with:

I can provide transliteration these days as long as the charters are clear enough, but proper translation has become extremely difficult for me at preset. Translation is probably the best option for now. Good luck with your project. Ico and SotC are among my favorite games. I still need to get back to The Last Guardian! -Thibbs (talk) 15:28, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-09-06T15:28:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Thibbs-2021-09-06T15:28:00.000Z-Electroguv-2021-09-05T21:21:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Hi Thibbs. I just made SVGs for the non-letter symbols, and am wondering if color matters. Should hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur etc. be red? (Is that why oxygen is red in ball-and-stick model kits?) If so, they could be divorced from Sun, Moon, Earth files. It would only take a few minutes. Copper & platinum would also be distinct from anything we could do with Ⓒ & Ⓟ with html. But I only see refs for some in B&W. — kwami (talk) 04:47, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-06T04:47:00.000Z","author":"Kwamikagami","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Kwamikagami-2021-12-06T04:47:00.000Z-Daltonian_symbols","replies":["c-Thibbs-2021-12-06T14:58:00.000Z-Kwamikagami-2021-12-06T04:47:00.000Z"],"displayName":"kwami"}}-->

Also here. Copper/Venus has a doubled cross, and the lack of a shield is really old for iron/Mars, but again with the double cross, almost Sagittarius. Worth adding as additional alch symbols? There's probably no end to variants like those, though this source has the usual symbols for silver, lead and sulphur (which Wikisource editors insist on keeping with incomplete inking on that page, though I was able to replace it elsewhere). — kwami (talk) 19:01, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-06T19:01:00.000Z","author":"Kwamikagami","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Kwamikagami-2021-12-06T19:01:00.000Z-Daltonian_symbols","replies":["c-Kwamikagami-2021-12-23T06:12:00.000Z-Kwamikagami-2021-12-06T19:01:00.000Z"],"displayName":"kwami"}}-->

Glad to see you back, albeit at a smaller level. And, ugh, about the newsletter; I've tried to reach out to users here and on Wikipedia's Discord, but I've received unwilling feedback or was ignored. Rude, much? I've been busy IRL these past months, and when I have free time I spend it on personal requests or other projects, but I will eventually return to the idea when I can actively keep it running. Please do not spend time there do if you don't have the energy or time; this is more of an update if anything. Once again, keep up your good work, and always put health and betterness over Wikipedia. Panini!🥪05:09, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2022-02-05T05:09:00.000Z","author":"Panini!","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Panini!-2022-02-05T05:09:00.000Z-Panini!-2022-02-05T04:47:00.000Z","replies":["c-Thibbs-2022-02-05T23:13:00.000Z-Panini!-2022-02-05T05:09:00.000Z"]}}-->
I appreciate the update. I'm still somewhat incapacitated, but I'm hoping to be able to slowly complete some of the projects I had been intending to finish previously. It's a pity I wasn't able to continue helping with the newsletter after July, but who knows what the future holds. Currently I'm still working IRL, but I have a solid support network and what more can I ask for? Good luck with the personal requests. I had dabbled in WP:VG/R back in the 2013-14 talk period (specifically in cleaning from WP:RA->WT:VG/Rhere), but when all the 2005-2013 requests were dumped into the main WT:VG, my efforts were dashed and I lost interest. It's honorable work, though. Kudos to your efforts there! -Thibbs (talk) 23:13, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2022-02-05T23:13:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Thibbs-2022-02-05T23:13:00.000Z-Panini!-2022-02-05T05:09:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
Question(s)
For future reference, how does the newsletter determine quarterly release dates? I tried to look at past dates but they seem to fluctuate, so I was wondering how you figure that information out. Panini!•🥪
Hey Panini!! I believe the rule was pretty simple: First Sunday after the first following month. So for example we released 1st Quarter 2020 (Jan-Mar) as the first Sunday after finishing March 31 (5 April 2020). 1st Quarter 2017 (Jan-Mar) became the first April (2 April 2017). For 1st Quarter 2022 (Jan-Mar) we would normally look for the first Sunday in April (e.g. 4 April 2022). 2 Quarter 2022 (Apr-Jun) would be 4 July 2022, 3 Quarter 2022 (Jul-Sep) would be 2 Oct 2022, and 4 Quarter 2022 (Oct-Dec) would be 1 Jan 2024 (or 8 Jan 2024 if needed). :) -Thibbs (talk) 05:16, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2022-03-26T05:16:00.000Z","author":"Thibbs","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Thibbs-2022-03-26T05:16:00.000Z-Question(s)","replies":[]}}-->

I've been working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Reference library/Games for the last few months, slowly going through the first 100 issues that are on archive.org - I've gone through the first 10 and have a couple hours of free time this morning, so we'll see how much further I get. :) BOZ (talk) 15:55, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230102155500","author":"BOZ","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-BOZ-20230102155500-GAMES_magazine","replies":[]}}-->
For the talk page watchers of Thibbs, I just want to come here and state that I have finally finished going through this reference page that he started, going through the first 116 issues of this magazine and noting all the reviews (and "Games 100" features, and other special listings). It was quite a lot of work, but I was glad to have done it because it led to finding a lot of reviews for games that really needed it. I found it in this condition, looking good enough for many issues after 100, but nothing at all for the first 100 issues, and when I found them on the Internet Archive, I set about doing something about that. I made my first edit to the page in May 2022, then 20 more edits in November 2022 through January 2023, and after learning about the passing of Thibbs and finishing some other projects I steamrolled through the remainder in the past two weeks. I hope that this is something I have done that Thibbs would admire. If more issues pop up on IA in the future, I will probably return to this sooner or later, but for now I need a long break. :) BOZ (talk) 01:51, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230617015100","author":"BOZ","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-BOZ-20230617015100-GAMES_magazine","replies":["c-Panini!-20230617035900-BOZ-20230617015100","c-Whereizben-20230703133000-BOZ-20230617015100"]}}-->

Thomas Asa Hibbs of Westford, Vt., died of brain cancer on April 14, 2023, at home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 41 years old. He was born in New York City in 1981, moved to Vermont in 1986, and attended Westford Elementary School and Essex Junction High School. He graduated from McGill University in 2004, where he majored in English. He received a JD from Rutgers University Law School in 2010 and an MS in information science from the State University of New York at Albany in 2014. From 2015 to 2022 he was an integral member of the office staff of the family dental practice.
He was an avid and expert collector of vinyl records, books and retro video games, gleaning gems from bins in secondhand shops, which he visited frequently. He cataloged and preserved his treasures on digital archival sites to share them with others. Thomas was committed to preserving information by contributing articles to Wikipedia on various topics which interested him, from expanding the Westford, Vt., page and the pages about sites in Hungary connected to close relatives and family history to articles on Satellaview, the periodic table, Tove Janssen, and tongue-in-cheek scholarly pages about the Lapine language and gamergate ants. A perfectionist, he reveled in detail in his career, collecting and play.
Thomas was exuberantly curious about the world, history and people. He was an amateur naturalist who studied and knew about ferns, mushrooms and insects and had an uncanny ability to find four-leaf clovers, interesting fossils and arrowheads, on occasion. He loved to scan the sky and was always keeping track of meteor showers, eclipses and aurora borealis activities. He would often entice his father and brothers to come and lie down in the field near the house on summer nights and watch for satellites, meteors and fireflies. He loved nonhuman beings of all kinds, especially the family dogs and his late cat, Azrael. He had a special soft spot in his heart for children, his nephews and cousins, and young patients in the dental practice who delighted in his friendship. He was never angry, never had an enemy, and he never got into any fights. He was an excellent Wordament and Boggle player. He never played cards or competitive board games against his family because he couldn't stand to see any of them lose. No one loved sugar as much as Thomas, who would even put sugar into apple cider! He was also proud of his Hungarian heritage and cultivated at first a tolerance, then a fondness, for hot, spicy foods, following in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather. He very much enjoyed almond flavor, poppy seeds and edible maple products. Music was a large part of Thomas’ life and, despite difficulties communicating in the late stages of his illness, he never lost his ability to appreciate music and connect with his family through music.
Thomas loved and was beloved by his family and friends. He was a devoted son, brother, nephew and uncle, and family was very important to him. He is survived by his parents, Michael and Agnes Hibbs; his siblings, Julia Collins (Shane), Peter Hibbs (John Cruisce) and John Hibbs; nephews Keith and Oliver Collins; aunts Timea Széll (Judith Weisenfeld), Anne Diel (Kris) and Annamária Széll; uncles Stephen Hibbs (Linda Campbell), Paul Hibbs (Rebecca), Henry Hibbs (Judy) and Kálmán Széll (Lisa); by Kálmán Széll (Mária), Thomas’ great-uncle, who is an identical twin of his late maternal grandfather; and many cousins in the United States and Hungary. A gentle, kind and humble soul with a brilliant mind, sense of humor and eccentricity in the best ways, he will be missed by many. The world was a better place because he was in it, and we will never forget him.
The family is deeply grateful for the care and friendship of Thomas’ neuro-oncologist Dr. Alissa A. Thomas of the University of Vermont Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions in Thomas’ honor and memory to the UVM Cancer Center.

He will be sorely missed. Thibbs was an active steward of the Wikipedia video games project, providing scans from out-of-print magazines, translating non-English texts, editing the newsletter, and founding the video game reliable sources custom search engine used by many editors to find quality sources in a sea of clickbait. The archives of this user talk page are a testament to how friendly and helpful he was to myself and other editors. I think of how many article Reference sections have been touched by his presence, and how those contributions will live forever in our recognized/featured articles. My condolences to his friends and family. czar17:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230416172600","author":"Czar","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Czar-20230416172600-Whereizben-20230417005500","replies":[]}}-->

I think the easiest way for me to do this is with a timeline of events. In October I was invited to Wikiproject Nintendo and shortly after branched out to the more active Wikiproject video games. This was before I was working on any other article besides my first, so I was exploring the inner parts of Wikipedia. I stumbled on the newsletter and I loved the concept and wanted to get involved. I dropped my first comment on its talk page on November 16, 2020. Enter Thibbs, who was the first to respond, as the most active member of the newsletter. There were others, but he was the user who stuck around for the long run. The newsletter was his creation, as well as the video game reference library and search engine, the latter of which I use all the time and recommend to others often.
I would continue to actively help Thibbs with the newsletter for the next six months. I would assist him in keeping it running by doing manual work and the tedious stuff, which he was very thankful for. His positive and encouraging energy would ensure that I would stick around and keep helping. Thibbs was very creative with what he did, including conducting interviews and writing video game-related essays, the one which I was around to see written was Follow-up: VG editing in a time of COVID.
Thibbs and I would continue working and would write back to each other often and without delay over these six months to discuss and work on the newsletter drafts, as evidenced by its talk page. In February I reached out to Thibbs' talk page about an idea I had for the newsletter, which he encouraged me to continue with. At the time I didn't want to do anything with the newsletter without reaching out to Thibbs first, as this was his creation after all. This would result in a bit of pestering, but he never complained. I wanted to greet him with hopes that his medical issues were treating him favorably, whatever they were; I cited vapours because he had mentioned it in this edit summary. The details were vague and small, resulting in me greatly underestimating how big his medical problems were.
July 6th, the deadline for the next newsletter was approaching, and I was away from technology and relied on Thibbs to complete the rest of the newsletter and send it out at the time. I pestered a bit, to no response, which led me to pester some more. He finally responded saying he would send me an email, which confirmed the worst. He filled me in on the journey of his health complications and the newsletter in retrospect; I was very distraught when the email bluntly read "I have brain cancer". In 2018 he had surgery and went through an intense recovery process. Another user was helping keep the newsletter running at the time, but Thibbs' absence temporarily retired the newsletter. He returned at a smaller activity level. During one of his bi-monthly checkups in 2021, the cancer had unfortunately returned, affecting a core part of his brain. At the time of the email he as a week away from surgery and was still working full-time, which shows just how humble Thibbs was (in his email he also described himself as "optimistic by nature"). This was a lot for me to take in (I'm still quite young now, let alone two years ago). Work on the newsletter immediately subsided and I gave him my best wishes and prayers. To practically repeat history, I wasn't reliable at the time to continue the newsletter on my own and it was once again retired. He returned a bit under a year later with the article Sludge Life, and we greeted each other and went on to do our own projects and tackle our backlogs of Wikipedia editing. A question I had about when newsletters should be scheduled would be my last interaction with him.
Thibbs is my favorite editor. Most other users I meet here I would only work with out of necessity when it came to editing, but I worked with Thibbs on a project based only on the love for what we did. He had a kindhearted, hardworking attitude that I strive to have myself. Thibbs was a very inspiring editor and helped ensure my stay to improve the website. I give my sincere condolences to his family, who I'm certain were lucky to have him as a part of their life. Thanks for your thoughtful and detailed comments - you’ve summed up Thomas well. Always incredibly thoughtful, humble and driven to help improve things, with an intense curiosity. I am also just seeing this now. I remember crossing paths with Thibbs in a case of vandalism prevention/cleanup before I retired from Wikipedia many years ago. His good spirit and willingness to help out are still fresh in my mind. And as one of the editors that helped start the VG Newsletter, it was especially encouraging to see him help keep the newsletter going and take it to new heights. Wikipedia and the world lost a good person. I'll keep him and his family in my thoughts. I'm very late, but I met Thomas in person in 2014 at a Wikipedia workshop at the University of Maryland organized by User:Keilana. Unfortunately, I fell out of Wikipedia editing for a while and lost touch with Thomas, but I remember him being really friendly and spent a lot of time with him over that weekend. To his friends and family, I'm sorry for your loss. I found a group photo from that weekend with Thomas in it in my email that I can pass along to User:Whereizben if anyone in the family would like it. I never talked to the guy, but I decided to come here to lay my respects for this editor and condolences for him because even though I never knew much about him, I could at least see on the Video Game WikiProject that he was a very dedicated individual and I saw him around a lot giving help and advice for articles. I'm sorry I never left a comment here sooner. This community has lost a truly dedicated member, and he will never be forgotten thanks to said dedication. Thibbs' work on the VG project was exemplary and inspiring. I only really interacted with him on a single occasion several years ago. He was affable, considerate and helpful. Thanks in part to his involvement, an important video game-themed Wikipedia entry saw a major revision and was able pass a featured article review. His legacy will endure and live on. May he rest in peace. Hello, talk page stalkers. I am running some clean-up of the WP:VG Reference Library and noticed that Thibbs had listed himself as owning numerous video game magazines and books, and being a point-of-contact to get info from these sources. Hi @Whereizben, I worked with Thibbs on video game sourcing.
