Die nasionale vlag van Laos is op 2 Desember 1975 amptelik in gebruik geneem. Die vlag vertoon drie horisontale bane in rooi, blou en rooi met ’n wit skyf in die middel van die blou baan.

Simboliek

Die wit skyf in die middel stel die land se helder toekoms en eenheid van die Laos-volk onder die leierskap van die Rewolusionêre Volksparty van Laos voor. Daar word ook aangevoer dat dit die volmaan oor die Mekongrivier voorstel. Die rooi bane stel die bloedvergieting van die volk in hul stryd om vryheid voor en die blou stel vooruitgang voor.

Ontwerp

Die horisontale bane is in verhouding 1:2:1 (hierdie vlagverhouding staan bekend as die Spaanse dwarsbalk). Die wit skyf is reg in die middel van die vlag en is twee vyfdes van die hoogte van die vlag.

Geskiedenis

Van 1952 tot die val van die koninklike regering in 1975 het Laos ’n rooi vlag gehad met ’n driekoppige olifant (die god Airavata in wit in die middel van die vlag. Bo-op die olifant sambreel met nege voue terwyl die olifant op ’n voetstuk met vyf lae staan. Die wit olifant is ’n algemene koninklike simbool in Suidoos-Asië, die drie koppe het verwys na die drie voormalige koninkryke Vientiane, Luangprabang en Champasak wat al drie deel uitmaak van die huidige Laos.

Die sambreel met nege voue is ook ’n koninklike simbool met sy oorsprong in Berg Meru in die Boeddhistiese kosmologie. Die voetstuk was verteenwoordigend van die reg waarop die land staatgemaak het.
