Ted Turner

Robert Edward Turner III (gebore 19 November 1938) is 'n Amerikaanse entrepreneur, televisievervaardiger, media-eienaar en filantroop. Hy het die Cable News Network (CNN), die eerste 24-uur kabelnuuskanaal, gestig. Daarbenewens het hy WTBS gestig, wat die superstasie-konsep in kabeltelevisie begin het, wat later TBS geword het.

As 'n filantroop het hy $1 miljard gegee om die Verenigde Nasies-stigting te skep, 'n openbare liefdadigheidsorganisasie om Amerikaanse steun vir die VN te verbreed. Turner dien as voorsitter van die raad van direkteure van die Verenigde Nasies-stigting.[1] Boonop het Turner in 2001 saam met die Amerikaanse senator Sam Nunn (D-GA) die Nuclear Threat Initiative gestig. NTI is 'n nie-partydige organisasie wat toegewy is aan die vermindering van globale afhanklikheid van, en die voorkoming van die verspreiding van kern-, chemiese en biologiese wapens. Hy dien tans as Mede-Voorsitter van die Raad van Direkteure.

Turner se mediaryk het begin met sy pa se advertensiebordbesigheid, Turner Outdoor Advertising, wat hy in Maart 1963 ná sy pa se selfmoord oorgeneem het.[2] Dit was $1 miljoen werd. Sy aankoop van 'n Atlanta UHF-stasie in 1970 het die Turner Broadcasting System begin. CNN het die nuusmedia omskep, wat die ruimtependeltuig Challenger-ramp in 1986 en die Persiese Golfoorlog in 1991 gedek het. Turner het die Atlanta Braves-bofbalspan omskep in 'n nasionaal gewilde konsessiesaak (insluitend die wen van die 1995 Wêreldreeks onder sy eienaarskap), en het die liefdadigheidsorganisasie Goodwill Games geloods. Hy het gehelp om belangstelling in professionele stoei te laat herleef deur World Championship Wrestling (WCW) te koop.

Turner se voorliefde vir omstrede uitsprake het hom die byname "The Mouth of the South" en "Captain Outrageous" besorg.[3][4] Turner het ook sy bates aan omgewingsake gewy. Hy was die grootste private grondeienaar in die Verenigde State totdat John C. Malone hom in 2011 oortref het.[5][6] Hy gebruik baie van sy grond vir plase om bisonvleis te herpopulariseer (vir sy Ted's Montana Grill-ketting), wat die grootste trop ter wêreld bymekaarmaak. Hy het ook die omgewing-tema geanimeerde reeks Captain Planet and the Planeteers geskep.[7]
