Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Portugees: [luˈiz iˈnasju ˈlulɐ dɐ ˈsiwvɐ], luister (hulp·inligting); * 27 Oktober 1945) is politikus, was hy die 35ste president van Brasilië tussen 1 Januarie 2003 en 1 Januarie 2011. Hy is weer verkies in die 2022 presidensiële verkiesing en is op 1 Januarie 2023 as die 39ste President van die Republiek ingehuldig.[2]

Lula word as een van die gewildste politici in die geskiedenis van Brasilië beskou en tydens sy ampstermyn was hy een van die gewildste politici in die wêreld.[3][4][5] Hy is in Time se 2010 The 100 Most Influential People in the World,[6] en Perry Anderson het hom "die suksesvolste politikus van sy tyd genoem."[7]

Op 17 Maart 2016 is Lula deur Dilma Rousseff as personeelhoof van die presidentskap aangewys, maar regter Justice Gilmar Mendes van die Hoogste Federale Hof het die aanstelling weens lopende federale ondersoeke geblokkeer.[8][9] Op 12 Julie 2017 is hy skuldig bevind aan geldwassery en passiewe korrupsie, soos dit in die Brasiliaanse strafreg as 'n ontvangs van 'n omkoopgeld deur 'n staatsamptenaar of staatsamptenaar gedefinieer is. Hy is deur regter Sérgio Moro tot nege jaar en ses maande jaar tronkstraf gevonnis[10][11] maar bly in afwagting van 'n appèl van die vonnis vry. Op 24 Januarie 2018 het die plaaslike federale hof van die vierde streek, wat 'n paneel van drie beoordelaars is, eenstemmig Moro se beslissing teen Lula gehandhaaf.[12] Op 5 April 2018 het die hoogste federale hof Lula se habeas corpus-pleidooi verwerp; op dieselfde dag is 'n lasbrief vir sy arrestasie uitgereik.[13][14] Op 7 April 2018 het hy begin om sy tronkstraf van 12 jaar in Curitiba uit te dien.

In November 2019 het die Hooggeregshof beslis dat aanhoudings met hangende appèlle onwettig was en Lula is gevolglik uit die tronk vrygelaat.[15] In Maart 2021 het hooggeregshofregter Edson Fachin beslis dat al Lula se skuldigbevindings nietig verklaar moet word, omdat hy verhoor is deur 'n hof wat nie behoorlike jurisdiksie oor sy saak gehad het nie.[16]
