Ranah Ampek Hulu Tapan adalah sebuah kecamatan yang terletak di bagian selatan Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan Provinsi Sumatera Barat, Indonesia.[1] Kecamatan ini adalah pemekaran dari Kecamatan Basa Ampek Balai Tapan. Wilayah Kecamatan Ranah Ampek Hulu Tapan adalah sebagian wilayah Tapan yang sebagiannya masuk wilayah Kecamatan Basa Ampek Balai Tapan. Kota Tapan berada di jalan lintas barat Sumatera dan persimpangan yang menghubungkan tiga provinsi, yaitu Sumatera Barat, Jambi dan Bengkulu.
Secara administrasi Kecamatan Ranah Ampek Hulu Tapan terbagi atas 10 Pemerintahan Nagari yaitu antara lain:

Posisi wilayah Tapan (Kecamatan Ranah Ampek Hulu Tapan dan Kecamatan Basa Ampek Balai Tapan) sangat strategis karena berada pada persimpangan tiga provinsi, yaitu Sumatera Barat, Jambi dan Bengkulu. Kecamatan Ranah Ampek Hulu Tapan sebelah timurnya berbatasan langsung dengan Kota Sungai Penuh dan Kabupaten Kerinci di Provinsi Jambi. Jarak Tapan dengan kota sekitarnya sebagai berikut:
Padang: ± 215 km (ke arah utara)
Painan: ± 145 km (ke arah utara)
Mukomuko Provinsi Bengkulu: ± 65 km (ke arah selatan)
Sungai Penuh Provinsi Jambi: ± 60 km (ke arah timur)
Utara: Kecamatan Basa Ampek Balai Tapan
Selatan: Kecamatan Lunang
Timur: Kota Sungai Penuh dan Kabupaten Kerinci Provinsi Jambi
Barat: Kecamatan Lunang
Secara geografis, daerah Tapan berada pada dataran rendah pesisir barat Pulau Sumatera, dengan kontur wilayah beragam, mulai dari dataran bergambut di bagian barat hingga selatan dan perbukitan rendah pada bagian utara hingga tinggi di bagian timur yang merupakan bagian dari gugusan Bukit Barisan. Dengan iklim tropis dan curah hujan tinggi, semakin ke arah timur suhu udara di Tapan semakin rendah karena semakin tinggi mengarah ke Dataran Tinggi Kerinci.
Perekonomian masyarakat Tapan sebagian besar adalah pertanian, dengan bertani Padi adalah mata pencarian utama masyarakat Tapan, diikuti Jagung, Palawija serta sebagian kecil buah-buahan seperti Semangka (karamojo).
Disamping itu potensi perkebunan juga menjadi mata pencarian masyarakat Tapan, yakni perkebunan Karet (parah) dan sekarang semakin berkembangnya perkebunah Sawit dan Kakao (cokelat). Serta yang telah terkenal lama serta menjadi ikon dan oleh-oleh dari Tapan yaitu Petai (ptai) dan Jengkol (jighiang) meski sekarang produksinya semakin berkurang.
Menurut Adat N’ghing Tapan, masyarakat Tapan dibagi atas 4 (empat) suku, yakni Malayu Kcik, Malayu Gdang, Caniago dan Sikumbang. Masing-masing suku dipimpin oleh datuk yang dikenal dengan Basa Ampek Balai dengan Machudum Sati sebagai Orang Tua Nagari (Ughang Tuo N’ghing) Tapan. Tiap-tiap suku dibagi atas beberapa kaum yang masing-masing kaum dipimpin oleh seorang Ninik Mamak (Pamakung). Adapun susu-suku tersebut antara lain sebagai berikut:

Saat ini yang memegang jabatan Penghulu di Tapan antara lain:
Sejak tahun 2000, masyarakat yang berada di enam kecamatan paling selatan di Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan ini telah memperjuangkan sebuah kabupaten baru yang meliputi daerah Renah Indojati (Kecamatan Air Pura, Kecamatan Pancung Soal, Kecamatan Basa Ampek Balai Tapan, Kecamatan Ranah Ampek Hulu Tapan, Kecamatan Lunang dan Kecamatan Silaut). Usulan pemekaran telah masuk dan dibahas oleh DPR RI, namun sampai saat ini belum juga disahkan. Saat ini masyarakat masih menunggu RUU tentang pembentukan Daerah Otonomi Baru (DOB) Kabupaten Renah Indojati disahkan menjadi UU sehingga Renah Indojati menjadi kabupaten sendiri dan terpisah dari Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan. Dengan Ibu kota Kabupaten berada di Bukit Buai, Nagari Bukit Buai Tapan, Kecamatan Basa Ampek Balai Tapan.[2]
