Daftar perwakilan Kanada untuk Film Internasional Terbaik pada Academy Award

Denys Arcand, sutradara The Barbarian Invasions (2003), film Kanada pertama yang meraih Penghargaan Akademi untuk Film Berbahasa Asing Terbaik.

Kanada telah mengirimkan sejumlah film untuk Penghargaan Akademi untuk Film Berbahasa Asing Terbaik sejak 1971. Penghargaan tersebut diberikan secara tahunan oleh Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Amerika Serikat kepada sebuah film durasi cerita yang dibuat di luar Amerika Serikat yang utamanya berisi dialog non-Inggris.[1] Penghargaan tersebut baru diperkenalkan pada Academy Awards 1956, di mana sebuah Penghargaan Akademi Merit kompetitif, yang dikenal sebagai Penghargaan Film Berbahasa Asing Terbaik, dibuat untuk film-film berbahasa non-Inggris, dan sejak itu diberikan secara tahunan.[2]

Diantara film-film tersebut, tiga film digarap oleh Denys Arcand: Jesus of Montreal, yang dinominasikan di Academy Awards ke-62; The Decline of the American Empire, yang dinominasikan di Academy Awards ke-59; dan sekuelnya, The Barbarian Invasions, yang menjadi pemenang di Academy Awards ke-76.[3] Days of Darkness karya Arcand masuk daftar pendek untuk Oscar, namun tidak dinominasikan. Empat sutradara Kanada lainnya yang memiliki film-film yang dinominasikan adalah Deepa Mehta untuk film Water di Academy Awards ke-79,[4] Denis Villeneuve untuk Incendies di Academy Awards ke-83,[5] Philippe Falardeau untuk Monsieur Lazhar di Academy Awards ke-84,[6] dan Kim Nguyen untuk War Witch di Academy Awards ke-85.[7]

Perwakilan

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences telah mengundang industri-industri film dari berbagai negara untuk mewakilkan film terbaik mereka pada Penghargaan Akademi untuk Film Berbahasa Asing Terbaik sejak 1956.[2] Komite Penghargaan Film Berbahasa Asing melihat proses dan ikhtisar seluruh film yang diwakilkan. Setelah itu, pemungutan suara rahasia diadakan untuk menentukan lima nominasi pada penghargaan tersebut.[1] Di bawah adalah daftar film yang diwakilkan oleh Kanada untuk ditinjau ulang olah Akademi untuk penghargaan tersebut menurut tahun dan acara Penghargaan Akademi yang diadakan. Dengan dua pengecualian (Atanarjuat yang berbahasa Inuktitut pada 2001 dan Water yang berbahasa Hindi pada 2005), semua perwakilannya adalah film-film Québécois. Semua film tersebut berbahasa Prancis, kecuali untuk A Bullet in the Head yang secara keseluruhan memakai sebuah bahasa terinvensi.[8] Perwakilan berbahasa Prancis lainnya menampilkan sejumlah bahasa lainnya yang meliputi Inuktitut (The Necessities of Life), Lingala (War Witch) dan Yiddish (Felix and Meira).[9]
