Academy Awards ke-45 diadakan pada 27 Maret 1973, di Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. Acara tersebut dipimpin oleh Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Charlton Heston, dan Rock Hudson.

Acara tersebut ditandai oleh pemboikotan Oscar yang dilakukan oleh Marlon Brando dan pengirimannya Sacheen Littlefeather untuk menjelaskan kenapa ia tidak tampil untuk menerima penghargaan Aktor Terbaik untuk The Godfather, dan oleh kemenangan kompetitif Oscar pertama Charlie Chaplin untuk Skor Asli Terbaik untuk film 20 tahun-nya Limelight, yang merupakan eligible karena film teersebut tidak ditayangkan di Los Angeles sampai 1972.[1][2] Chaplin meraih Academy Awards kehormatan pada 1929 dan 1972.

Cabaret, adaptasi Bob Fosse dari musikal panggung Broadway, mencetak rekor kemenangan Oscar terbanyak tanpa memenangkan Best Picture. Meskipun pemenang Best Picture The Godfather hanya meraih tiga Academy Awards, film tersebut sekarang dianggap sebagai salah satu film paling dicintai dan disambut sepanjang masa.

Tahun ini adalah pertama kalinya dua wanita Afrika Amerika meraih nominasi untuk Aktris Terbaik.[3]
