William Ewart Gladstone (d. 29 Aralık 1809 – ö. 19 Mayıs 1898), Britanyalı Liberal Partili bir politikacı ve Birleşik Krallık Başbakanı (1868–1874, 1880–1885, 1886 ve 1892–1894). Önemli bir politik reformcudur, popülist konuşmalarıyla tanınır, yıllarca Benjamin Disraeli ile bir politik yarış içinde olmuştur.

Liberaller seçimi kaybedince Benjamin Disraeli'yi yıpratmak için Osmanlı yönetimindeki Bulgarlar hakkında 5 Eylül 1876 tarihinde basılan, Bulgarian Horrors and the Question of the East,[1] başlıklı 64 sayfalık bir broşür kaleme alan ve Osmanlıların bağımsızlık isteyen Bulgarlara yaptıklarını alçakça ve eşi görülmemiş bir zulüm olarak sayan Gladstone, Türklerin dünyadan tasfiye edilmesi gerekliliğini anlattı. Gladstone'a göre Türkler, "insanlığın dev bir insanlık dışı örneği"dir. "Türk hükûmeti" olarak adlandırdığı Osmanlı hükûmeti için ise "hiçbir hükûmetin işlemediği kadar günah işlemiş, hiçbir hükûmet onun kadar günahkârlığa saplanmamış, hiçbiri onun kadar değişime kapalı olmamıştır" der.

İngiltere Kraliyet Ailesinden olmayan bir kişi için ilk defa düzenlenen devlet cenaze töreni William Ewart Gladstone için düzenlenmiştir.
