WorldCat, OCLC küresel kooperatifine katılım sağlayan 123 ülke ve bölgeden 17.900 kütüphanenin[2] arşivini listeleyen bir toplu katalogdur. OCLC, Inc. tarafından işletilmektedir.[3] Dünyanın en büyük bibliyografik veritabanıdır ve üye olan kütüphaneler toplu olarak bu veritabanının bakımını üstlenmektedir.[4]

Tarihçe

OCLC 1967'de Fred Kilgour liderliğinde kuruldu.[5] Aynı yıl OCLC sonradan WorldCat halini alacak bir toplu katalog teknolojisi geliştirmeye başladı ve ilk katalog tutanakları 1971'de eklendi.[5][6]

2003'te OCLC, üye olan kütüphanelerin arşivlerinin erişilebilirliğini artırmak için WorldCat'teki kısaltılmış tutanakların bir kısmını web sitesi ve kitapçı ortaklarına açtı.[7][8]

Ekim 2005'te OCLC, okurların herhangi bir WorldCat kaydı ile ilgili yorum ve yapılandırılmış alansal bilgi ekleyebilmesini sağlayan WikiD adında bir wiki projesi başlattı.[9] Sonradan WikiD sona erdirilse de kullanıcının geliştirdiği içerik sistemi WorldCat'e daha sonradan farklı yollarla entegre edildi.[10][11]

2006'da WorldCat, 10 yılı aşkın bir süredir kütüphanelere hizmet veren ve daha gelişmiş aramalara izin veren[12] FirstSearch arayüzüne[13] ek olarak herkesin arama yapabilmesine açık bir web sitesi haline geldi.[12]

2007'de WorldCat Identities, 20 milyon "identity"e (ağırlıklı olarak yazarların ve basılı yayınların öznelerinin metaverileri) sayfalarda yer vermeye başladı.[14]

Mayıs 2019 verilerine göre WorldCat'te 2.8 milyar fiziksel ve dijital kütüphane yayınına ait 484 dilde 450 milyondan fazla bibliyografik tutanak[3] ve 100 milyondan fazla kişiyi bulunduran bir kişi veri kümesi bulunmaktadır.[15]
