Noel ilâhileri,[1] Noel ve Advent dönemlerinde çoğunlukla kiliselerde, şehir merkezlerinde veya kapı kapı dolaşarak, grupça seslendirilen dinî şarkılar. Bazı Noel koroları halktan bağış toplarlar. Kapı kapı dolaşarak ilâhileri söyleyen çocuklara şekerleme veya para verilir.

Noel ilâhileri genellikle kıtalar veya beyitler arasında tekrarlanan korolardan oluşur. Çoğunlukla koro, kıta1, koro, kıta2, koro, ... yapısındadır.[2] Pek çok Noel ilâhisi makaroniktir (iki dilin karışımı). Örneğin İngilizce Noel ilâhilerinin çoğu Latince ve İngilizce karışımıdır.[2]

Etimoloji

Belirli bir dinî teması olan şarkılar İngilizcede carol olarak adlandırılırlar. "Şarkı" anlamına gelen carol sözcüğü Fransız ve Anglo-Norman kökenlidir ve pagan kökleri olabilir.[2]

İngilizce ilâhiler altın dönemini 1350-1550 yılları arasında yaşamıştır. Bu döneme ait birkaç ilâhi melodisi ve yaklaşık 500 metin günümüze kadar ulaşmayı başarmıştır. Bu ilâhilerin çoğu Meryem, çocuk İsa ve şölenleri Noel civarında kutlanan azîzler ile ilgilidir. Birkaç tane de Paskalya ve Lent ilâhisi vardır.[2]
