Strmhlavý bombardér

Strmhlavý bombardér je typ bombardovacích lietadiel, ktorý na svoj cieľ útočí pri rýchlom a strmom zostupe, tzv. strmhlavým náletom. Takýto manéver umožňuje väčšiu presnosť zásahu bomby a lepšiu ochranu pred protilietadlovou paľbou nepriateľa. Strmhlavé bombardéry sa z toho dôvodu používali hlavne na útoky proti relatívne malým alebo pohybujúcim sa cieľom, ako sú mosty, automobily alebo lode. Útok strmhlav navyše umožňuje zasiahnuť paluby vojnových lodí, ktoré sú menej pancierované ako ich boky na čiare ponoru.

Asi najznámejším strmhlavým bombardérom bol Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, ktorý sa stal symbolom tohto druhu lietadiel. Stroje mali na ľavej kapotovanej nohe svojho podvozku pripevnenú sirénu, ktorá vyvolávala pri strmhlavom lete, kedy ju zvykli letci zapínať, výrazný kvílivý zvuk. Ďalšie strmhlavé bombardéry boli nasadené najmä počas bojov v Pacifiku, kde sa výrazne zapojili do námorných bojov. Boli to napríklad americké stroje SBD Dauntless, či SB2C Helldiver alebo ich japonskí konkurenti, napr. Aiči D3A Val.

Po skončení druhej svetovej vojny sa strmhlavé bombardéry z výzbroje dosť rýchlo vytratili. Bolo to spôsobené zefektívnením protilietadlovej obrany, ako aj pokrokom vo vývoji stíhacích lietadiel, ktoré dokázali zväčša proti relatívne pomalším strmhlavým bombardérom úspešne zasahovať. V rovnakom čase umožnil rozvoj najstarších počítacích strojov vytvoriť podstatne dokonalejšie a hlavne presnejšie bombardovacie zameriavače, ktoré bolo možné inštalovať prakticky do akéhokoľvek lietadla. Časť úloh strmhlavých bombardérov tak prebrali klasické taktické alebo stredné bombardéry. Zdokonaľovanie stíhacích lietadiel a ich nasadenia proti pozemným cieľom, spôsobilo vznik nového druhu tzv. stíhacích bombardérov, ktorých nasadenie pri útokoch na menšie ciele už bolo dostatočne efektívne.
