Southend-on-Sea (čita se Sautend on Si) zvan često samo Southend je grad, borough i unitarna jedinica od 177,931 stanovnika[1] na istoku Engleske u Grofoviji Essex.

Geografija

Southend leži u estuariju rijeke Temze i duž obala Sjevernog mora, udaljen 64 km istočno od Londona.[2]

Kako je najbliže ljetovalište pored Londona, godišnje ga posjeti preko milion turista. Danas sve više Londončana živi u njemu, i putuje u London na posao.[2]

Historija

Southend je sve do 19. vijeka bio malo ribarsko selo.

U moderno ljetovalište je izrastao, nakon što ga je 1801. posjetila princeza Charlotte od Walesa, a nakon tog - 1803. i njena majka, princeza Caroline (žena kralja Georgea IV).[2]

Privreda

Southend je poznat po svom keju duž mora dugom 2 km, kao i po svojim plažama, uređenim vrtovima, jedrilicama u luci, kinima na otvorenom, karnevalima i brojnim atrakcijama uz morsku šetnicu.[2]

U predgrađu Prittlewell leži samostan iz 12. vijeka, u kom je danas snješten muzej.

Pored turizma koji je glavna grana privrede, Southend ima i nešto lake industrije.[2]
