«To Daddy» — песня Долли Партон. Изначально вышла в исполнении Эммилу Харрис на одноимённом сингле 1977 года, а затем на её четвёртом кантри-альбоме Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town (1978). Достигла позиции № 3 в чарте Hot Country Songs журнала Billboard и № 1 в хит-параде Country Tracks канадского издания RPM. Версия в исполнении самой Долли Партон впервые появилась в 1995 году на сборнике I Will Always Love You. The Essential Dolly Parton One.

Предыстория

Песня «To Daddy» повествует о женщине, день за днём терпевшей неверность и безразличное отношение своего мужа, но не подававшей вида ради благополучия детей[5]. Когда дети вырастают и больше в ней не нуждаются, героиня, оставив прощальную записку, уходит из семьи в поисках любви и счастья, которых ей не хватало все прошлые годы[6]. История рассказывается от имени ребёнка и, как отмечает Долли Партон, описывает реальные отношения между её родителями, за тем лишь исключением, что её мать, несмотря на все прошлые обиды и огорчения, в итоге вернулась домой[5].

Для своей пластинки All I Can Do Партон записала песню «Boulder to Birmingham» авторства Эммилу Харрис. Решив сделать последней сюрприз, она в 1976 году ещё до релиза пригласила её в студию послушать готовые треки[6]. Среди них оказалась и «To Daddy», сильно впечатлившая Харрис[7]: «Это словно рассказ О. Генри, потому что она сбивает тебя с толку. Ты думаешь, что в конце героиня умрёт, но Долли делает резкий кульбит и всё кончается совсем иначе»[6]. В итоге, несмотря на возражения своего партнёра Портера Вагонера, Партон не выпустила песню сама, а уступила её подруге[8].

Композиция в исполнении Харрис вышла в ноябре 1977 года как сингл, а затем на альбоме Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town (1978) и быстро стала одной из самых популярных в её репертуаре[9]. Трек поднялся до позиции № 3 в Hot Country Songs журнала Billboard и достиг вершины чарта Country Tracks журнала RPM[10][11]. В 2003 году он также появился на трибьют-альбоме Just Because I’m a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton[12]. Записанная в 1976 году версия самой Партон, была впервые издана почти 20 лет спустя[9] — на сборнике I Will Always Love You. The Essential Dolly Parton One (1995)[13].
