A província (em indonésio: provinsi or propinsi) é o nível mais elevado da entidade subnacional do governo local na Indonésia. Cada província tem seu próprio governo local, liderado por um governador, e tem seu próprio corpo legislativo. O governador e membro dos representantes locais são eleitos por voto popular para mandatos de cinco anos.

Atualmente, a Indonésia é constituída por 33 províncias, sete das quais foram criadas desde 2000 e cinco províncias receberam estatuto especial: Achém; para o uso da xaria como a lei regional da província, Região Especial de Joguejacarta; para ser governado em um sistema de monarquia antiga, Papua; para a implementação do desenvolvimento contínuo[necessário esclarecer], Papua Ocidental; para a concessão de implementação do desenvolvimento contínuo e Região Especial da Capital Jacarta. As províncias são ainda divididas em regências (em indonésio: kabupaten) e cidades.

As províncias estão oficialmente agrupadas em sete unidades geográficas.[1]

  3. ↑ Papua Ocidental foi criada a partir de uma área a oeste da província de Papua, em fevereiro de 2003, inicialmente com o nome de Irian Jaya Barat, posteriormente renomeada para Papua Barat (Papua Ocidental) em 7 de fevereiro de 2007. A divisão é controversa: Em novembro de 2004, um tribunal indonésio concordou que a divisão violou as leis de autonomia da Papua, no entanto, o tribunal decidiu que, devido a nova província já ter sido criada, ela deveria permanecer separada de Papua. A decisão também proibiu a criação de uma outra província proposta, Central Irian Jaya, porque a separação ainda não estava concluída. Até junho de 2008, ainda não havia sido publicado um código ISO 3166-2 para Papua Ocidental. A tendência seria o código ID-PB. Nota: ISO 3166-2 Newsletter II-1 (correção de 19/2/2010) página 18-19 confirma o código como ID-PB. ver http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_3166-2_newsletter_ii-1_corrected_2010-02-19.pdf. O código ID-IJ atualmente refere-se à região geográfica que abrange Papua e Papua Ocidental.
