Vishnu er en av de viktigste gudene i hinduismen, og dyrkes ikke minst i sine inkarnasjoner som Krishna ogRama. Vishnu blir framstilt med fire armer som holder en konkylie, lotusblomst, diskos og en klubbe. Han rir på den store ørnen Garuda eller kjempeslangen Shesha. Han oppfattes som en gud fylt med kjærlighet og medfølelse. Derfor blir han ofte kalt kjærlighetens gud. Vishnus hustru er fruktbarhetens og lykkens gudinne Lakshmi, som også heter Shri.

I treenigheten trimurti framstår Vishnu som guden som opprettholder og beskytter verden. Vishnu har mange inkarnasjoner, dvs. han har blitt født i ulike skikkelser. Det er ti slike inkarnasjoner som er allment anerkjent. Disse ti er:

  • Fisken Matsya, som reddet Manu fra flommen
  • Skilpadden Kurma, som stokken hvilte på da urhavet ble kjernet.
  • Villsvinet Varaha, som berget jorda fra flommen
  • Menneskeløven Narasimha, som drepte demonen Hiranyakashipu
  • Dvergen Vamana, som målte ut verden i tre steg.
  • Parashurama, som overvant krigerne.
  • Prins Rama, som er hovedperson i eposet Ramayana.
  • Gjeteren, elskeren og krigeren Krishna.
  • Buddha, som forvirret demonene.
  • Kalki, som skal komme ridende på en hvit hest når den nåværende tidsalderen Kali Yuga tar slutt.

Fortellinger om Vishnus mange liv er kjent av alle indere, og finnes i mange versjoner. De mest populære er fortellingene om Krishna.
