Samojeder er forskjellige urfolk som lever delvis som nomader på tundraen og taigan nord i Russland og i det nordvestlige Sibir (fra området rundt Kvitsjøen til Tajmyrhalvøya, særlig ved elvene Ob og Jenisej) og snakker samojediske språk.

Tidligere fantes flere samojeder også i Sajan-fjellene i Sør-Sibir. Samojedene var opprinnelig jegere, men i dag lever de stort sett av reindrift og fiske, samt noe pelsdyroppdrett, jakt, jord- og skogbruk. Nganasan-folket var utelukkende jegere til langt innpå 1900-tallet. Samojedenes tradisjonelle religion har vært sjamanisme. Samojediske språk blir snakket av anslagsvis 30 000 mennesker.

Språk og folkegrupper

Samojedisk språk tilhører den uralske språkgruppe og er i slekt med finsk-ugriske språk. Samojedene deles inn i folkegrupper etter språkstammene:

  • Nenetsere (også kalt tundranenetsere, jurak-samojeder og juraker, samt skogsnenetsere og khandejarer m.m.)
  • Enetsere (også kalt enets, jenisejere, jenisejsamojeder, karasasamojeder m.m.)
  • Nganasanere (også kalt tavgisamojeder)
  • Selkupere (også kalt ostjaksamojeder)
  • Kamasinere (utdødd i 1919)
  • Motorere (utdødd)

Betegnelsen samojeder (samojed i entall) har ført til flere konflikter, fordi ordet på russisk (samojedy) betyr «de som spiser maten rå» eller «de som spiser seg selv», altså kannibalisme.
