John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band er det andre albumet til Plastic Ono Band, en tilfelig sammensatt gruppe mennesker sentrert rundt John Lennon og Yoko Ono. Det omtales også som det første solo-studioalbumet til John Lennon, da de tre første var samarbeidsplater med Yoko Ono og det fjerde var en live-plate. Dette var også det første kommersielle albumet med nye tekster John Lennon ga ut etter at The Beatles offisielt brøt opp. Samtidig som dette albumet ble innspilt, spilte Yoko Ono inn sitt album Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band.

Albumet kom kort tid etter at John Lennon hadde hatt stor suksess med sin tredje single, «Instant Karma!».[1] Mellom The Beatles' brudd og albumet hadde Lennon jobbet seg gjennom såkalt primalteori, der han hadde bearbeidet sine indre demoner, deriblant forholdet til foreldrene, The Beatles og åndelighet.[2] Denne teknikken er særlig merkbar i sangene «Mother», «Isolation» og «Remember».[3][4][5] «I Found Out» handler om avgudsdyrkelsen han holdt på med på 60-tallet, og en bekreftelse at han var fri for illusjoner.[6] «Working Class Hero» var oppgjøret mot arbeiderklassen som ble presset inn i middelklasseverdier. Det er blitt kommentert at av de fire beatlene, var Lennon den eneste som kunne plasseres trygt i en middelklassebakgrunn.[7] «Look at Me» var opprinnelig skrevet under The Beatles' opphold i Rishikesh, men ble også bruke i en bearbeidelse av situasjonen han hadde havnet i etter oppløsningen av The Beatles.[8] Sangen «God» er en mer komplisert sang. Den begynner med at han kommenterer sin forståelse av den katolske gudsforståelsen: «God is a concept by which we can measure our pain», en forlengelse av en kommentar fra Beatles-sangen «Girl», der han synger at «Was she told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure?». Etter dette synger Lennon om det han ikke lenger tror på, som inkluderer Elvis Presley, I Ching, Bibelen, Adolf Hitler, Buddha, mantra, Bhagavadgita, Bob Dylan (han sier Zimmerman, Dylans egentlige etternavn) og til slutt The Beatles. Fra nå av er det bare Yoko og han. I andre vers fortsetter han å distansere seg fra The Beatles ved å opplyse at han ikke lenger er en drømmevever eller en «hvalross», han er bare seg selv.[9] De tre sangene som er mer optimistiske i natur er «Hold on» (om ikke å gi opp)[10], «Love» (om kjærligheten til Yoko)[11] og «Well Well Well» en spøkefull observasjon om den seksuelle revolusjonen.[12]

Albumet nådde ellevteplass i Storbritannia og sjette i USA.[13]
