Gregorio Cortese (født i 1483 i Modena i Italia, død 21. september 1548 i Roma) var en av den katolske kirkes kardinaler.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Gregorio Cortese fikk utdannelse i de humanistiske emner i Modena under den lærde cistercienser Varino av Piacenza, og fortsatte så med rettslære i fem år, først ved universitetet i Bologna, så ved universitetet i Padova. Han tok doktorgraden som 17-åring.[trenger referanse]

Han gikk i kardinal Giovanni de' Medicis tjeneste (den senere pave Leo X).

Reformarbeid

Cortese ble munk, og da kardinalen ble valgt til pave i 1513 skrev han til ham og formante ham til å arbeide for kirkelig reform.

Han ble abbed en rekke steder, og i Venezia ble han kjent med kardinal Pietro Bembo.

I 1536 utnevnte pave Paul III ham til en kommisjon som skulle forberede et skriv som skulle påpeke de viktigste misbruk i kirken som det måtte ryddes opp i. Rett etter ble han apostolisk visitator og reformator for hele landet. Han var med kardinal Lorenzo Campeggio, nuntien i Tyskland, til religionsamtalene i Worms i 1540 mellom katolikker og lutheranere.

Kardinal

Han ble kreert til kardinal av pave Paul III den 2. juni 1542. I 1543 fikk han sammen med en rekke andre kardinaler i oppgave å forberede et kirkelig reformkonsil.

En annen kardinal i samme slekt var Ludovico Cortese (kreert 1294).
